Michael Cusack would recall how both Pat Nally and himself while walking through the Phoenix Park in Dublin seeing only a handful of people playing sports in the park so depressed them, that they agreed it was time to "make an effort to preserve the physical strength of our race." Young Ireland was a political and cultural movement in the 1840’s committed to an all-Ireland struggle for independence and democratic reform. Grouped around the Dublin weekly newspaper ‘’The Nation’’ it disagreed with Daniel O'Connell's Repeal Association, from which it separated in 1847.
In 1848, an unsuccessful insurrection was mounted by the Young Irelanders. Their leaders were well educated and included all religions. Who like the patriots of 1798, were wholly concerned with justice for the Catholic population who had recently achieved emancipation.
