POLAND CUTS FUEL VAT, SO WHY CAN’T IRELAND?

While Irish motorists continue to feel the pressure at the pumps, Poland has taken a very different approach.

The Polish Government has announced that VAT on petrol and diesel is being cut from 23% to just 8% until the end of December.

Poland is also cutting fuel excise to the minimum level permitted under EU rules.

Their stated reason? To reduce prices at the pumps and ease the pressure on Polish families and businesses.

Now compare that with Ireland.

Earlier this year, Simon Harris was questioned about reducing VAT on fuel. He argued that Ireland could not simply secure a VAT derogation on its own and that changing the rules would require unanimous agreement at EU level.

He also admitted something important: Ireland had NOT formally requested a zero VAT rate on fuel because feedback from the European Commission suggested unanimous support was unlikely.

So here is the question Irish motorists deserve an answer to:

If Poland, another EU member state, can find a way to temporarily slash VAT on petrol and diesel from 23% to 8%, why can't Ireland pursue similar measures?

Why does Poland appear willing to push ahead with extraordinary measures to protect motorists while the Irish Government repeatedly points towards EU restrictions?

Is the difference really that Ireland cannot do more?

Or is it that our Government is unwilling to pursue every possible avenue?

And it raises an even bigger question.

Does Poland's Government have a "citizens first" approach when household finances come under pressure, while Ireland's Government places greater emphasis on staying within the existing EU framework?

What do you think?

Should Ireland be pushing Brussels harder for the same flexibility Poland is using?
