Budget 2027: What does it mean for Ireland’s workforce? 🇮🇪

Following today’s Budget announcement, there’s plenty for both employees and employers to digest.

While the headlines focus on tax cuts and cost-of-living measures, from a recruitment perspective, some of the most important changes are those that could influence take-home pay, employment costs, salary expectations and people’s ability to participate in the workforce.

💶 Minimum wage increases to €14.94 per hour

From January, the National Minimum Wage will rise by 79c per hour. This is a significant consideration for employers with hourly-paid workforces and is likely to feed into wider conversations around pay differentials and salary structures.

📈 More take-home pay for many workers

The point at which a single worker enters the 40% income tax band increases by €2,500 to €46,500, while the Personal, PAYE and Earned Income tax credits increase by €125 to €2,125. The 3% USC threshold also rises from €28,700 to €30,300.

👔 Employer PRSI changes

The weekly earnings threshold for the lower rate of employer PRSI will increase from €552 to €600, designed in part to help employers absorb the impact of the higher minimum wage. The Government estimates the change could be worth approximately €650–€700 per employee per year where applicable.

👨‍👩‍👧 Childcare costs are coming down

The Government has announced measures to bring the maximum cost of full-time childcare down to €550 per month for children up to Senior Infants, with the changes due from September 2027. For working parents, more affordable childcare can be about much more than household finances — it can influence decisions around returning to work, working additional hours and career progression.

🏠 Further support for household costs

Core social welfare rates and State pensions will rise by €10 per week, while the Rent Tax Credit increases to €1,150 for an individual and €2,300 for a couple.

For us, these announcements are particularly relevant as we look towards the employment market in 2027.

Across our specialist divisions, we’ll explore the Budget measures most relevant to each sector alongside salary benchmarks, candidate expectations, skills shortages, recruitment trends and the challenges facing employers when attracting and retaining talent.

Ultimately, a Budget can tell us how the numbers are changing. Our focus will be on what those changes mean in practice for the people looking for their next opportunity and the businesses looking for their next great hire.

What a spread! A huge thank you to everyone across the Excel team who got involved in this year’s Big Coffee Morning Social for the Hospice.

From homemade cakes and sweet treats to sandwiches, scones, it was a brilliant team lunch — all while supporting the fantastic work of St Francis Hospice Dublin.
