Junior fish of the month entry

NAME: Daniel Bergin

SPECIES: Smoothhound

SIZE: N/A

REPORT: I headed to a beach in Wexford to target Bass, arriving around an hour before high tide. Just as high tide arrived, my brother landed a fish, and as soon as we released it, my own rod folded over and the drag started peeling!

The fish made a few cracking runs before I eventually managed to bring it in. A brilliant Smoothhound and an exciting catch.

FISH OF THE MONTH ENTRY.

NAME: Lyle Beattie

SPECIES: Salmon

SIZE: Estimated 9–10lb

REPORT: I was fishing a pool when I lost a decent-sized fish. On the very next cast, I got a massive hit and knew straight away I was into something special.

After an incredible fight lasting around eight minutes, I finally managed to get the fish into the net. The moment it hit the net, it was nothing but pride and joy. An unbelievable Salmon and definitely a fish I’ll remember for a long time.

FISH OF THE MONTH ENTRY.

NAME: Pauly Dennis

SPECIES: Perch

SIZE: 4lb

REPORT: I was out fishing on a light setup targeting Perch when this absolute beauty smashed an orange paddletail. With the fight it gave and the way it kept diving deep, I genuinely thought I’d hooked a decent-sized Pike.

After a brilliant battle, I eventually managed to land her. A quick photo and she was safely released, swimming away strong.

At 4lb, this is by far my PB Perch to date and a fish I won’t forget anytime soon.

FISH OF THE MONTH ENTRY.

NAME: Nathan Burrows

SPECIES: Porbeagle Shark

SIZE: Estimated 100lb+

REPORT: I was fishing aboard the Summer Rose out of Downings on a very rough day. After five hours targeting sharks, it finally all came together in the last hour when I hooked into my first ever Porbeagle.

After a battle lasting around 10 minutes, I finally managed to land the fish. I’ve been chasing one of these for years, so to finally get one feels absolutely amazing. The fish was estimated at just over 100lb and is a catch I’ll remember for a very long time.

FISH OF THE MONTH ENTRY.

NAME: Keith Russell

SPECIES: Porbeagle Shark

SIZE: N/A

REPORT: Out with John Fleming in Galway for what turned into a great day all round. This was the second fish to the boat and, incredibly, my first ever shark, never mind my first Porbeagle!

After having a few previous trips cut short due to the weather, everything finally fell into place on the day. Absolutely chuffed to land such an incredible fish and definitely one I’ll never forget.

🚨 ANGLERS – WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! 🎣

Fingal County Council is proposing new Beach/Foreshore Bye-Laws for 2026 which could have a major impact on sea angling across North Dublin.

The proposed restrictions include prohibiting fishing in designated bathing areas and restrictions affecting Blue Flag/candidate Blue Flag beaches and SAC/SPA areas.

If introduced as proposed, this could seriously reduce access to many of the places anglers have fished for generations, including areas around Donabate, Portmarnock, Malahide Estuary, Rogerstown Estuary, Baldoyle Bay and Howth.

🎣 This isn’t just about today’s anglers. It’s about the next generation.

We have seen a huge increase in children and teenagers taking up fishing over the last few years. Angling gets young people outdoors, teaches them about nature and conservation, and gives them something positive to be involved in.

Taking away access to their local coastline is a massive step backwards.

We absolutely support protecting wildlife, sensitive habitats and the safety of beach users. But blanket bans are not the answer.

Seasonal restrictions, designated angling areas and restrictions during busy bathing hours could all address genuine concerns without effectively removing recreational angling from huge sections of the Fingal coastline.

⚠️ PLEASE DON’T JUST COMMENT ON THIS POST. MAKE A SUBMISSION.

If anglers don’t make their voices heard during the consultation process, we can’t complain afterwards when the opportunity has passed.

Whether you’re a sea angler, coarse angler, game angler, tackle shop, club member, parent of a young angler or simply believe in maintaining reasonable public access to our coastline, please take a few minutes and submit your objection.

NAME: Nicholas Jacota

SPECIES: Couches Bream

SIZE: N/A

REPORT: Fishing on the Beara Peninsula in West Cork, Nicholas landed this lovely Couches Bream while bottom fishing with ragworm. The fish wasn’t measured as getting it safely back into the water as quickly as possible was the priority. A cracking and unusual catch for the Junior Fish of the Month competition.

JUNIOR FISH OF THE MONTH ENTRY.
NAME: Kacper Zarzycki
SPECIES: Triggerfish
SIZE: 47cm

REPORT: I was fishing for Po***ck with my dad and my mate when we spotted a school of Triggerfish. At first they were a bit shy, but once I switched over to limpet, they started going mad for it. Then I spotted one big fish, cast right on top of it, and it went straight for the bait. I was absolutely delighted to land this 47cm Triggerfish. A brilliant fish and a great experience.
