The DataMiningDNA.com website has launched a free online tool that checks how surnames rank in the 2000 and 2010 U.S. censuses.

The tool is available at https://www.dataminingdna.com/united-states-surname-ranking-tool/.

Founder Margaret O’Brien explains that the data behind the tool comes from public files provided by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The U.S. Surname Ranking Tool on DataMiningDNA.com provides a simple interface to quickly check how a surname ranks across two full censuses.

The tool provides both the rank and the total number of bearers of the name in the United States that year.

This will be useful for genealogy enthusiasts – and everybody else who wants to know if their surname is rare or common in the U.S.

We've started a series on using Find My Past for family research.

I always like to look at the background of a company before I upload my family tree to their website.

Find My Past is a long-established company that started out in 1965 as a small firm providing probate research for lawyers e.g. looking for descendants to settle an estate.

It's a fascinating story as to how they went from there to being a massive archive of British and Irish genealogy records (and newspapers).
