The vulnerability of a patient in a hospital can never be underestimated. Male or Female, the trust they place in caregivers to care for them during ill health should never be taken advantage of for personal gratification. As the judge stated, the breach of trust was serious enough to warrant prison time and removal from their trusted position as a healthcare worker.

For too long, survivors of non-recent s*xual abuse were ignored, silenced, or felt their voices didn’t matter. This case before the courts involving allegations dating back 50 years is a reminder that accountability has no expiry date, and age or health is no barrier to prosecution.

It's a shame the survivors of Michael Shine's abuse were not afforded justice, due to age and other health factors that halted criminal trials after years of delay tactics, judicial reviews, and errors by the DPP. His recent interviews with journalists show no signs of cognitive decline.
