Val Manning, the legendary creator of Manning’s Emporium in West Cork, went on his final journey from Kealkill serenaded by the sounds of Sean O Sé singing "Bantry Bay" and Sliabh Lucre fiddle player Joe Thoma showing what makes the music of this region so special.
Val was one of the key players in the artisan food world in Ireland. He was one of the earliest adopters of the artisan cheesemakers who emerged from the West Cork peninsulas, giving the cheesemakers a retail space where their work was sold by someone who understood their mentalities, their differences, their métier.
We were in the Emporium one day when an English tourist, carrying a welter of farmhouse cheeses in a basket, said “I just hope it’s as much fun eating them all as it has been buying them.” That retail magic was Val’s gift: you didn’t realise you were being charmed, until you noticed that you had bought every single thing that he had recommended and got you to taste. His Manning’s West Cork Food Fairs were amongst the first celebrations of the artisan life, annual jamborees that you didn’t dare miss, such was the craic and the cluster of talents Val would gather for the weekend.
The Emporium sails gloriously on, thanks to Val’s niece Laura and her husband, Andrew, who delivered a charming oration for Val, that vital soul who was one of the people who made West Cork, the place, into West Cork, the centre of the Universe.
