2016, the year my “interest” in cows turned into the career I wanted!
In January a group of us from WIT loaded onto a plane and heading across the world to New Zealand into the unknown for 12 weeks of work placement as part of our Ag Science degree.
I landed on a 1500 cow farm and loved it so much I ended up staying for 9 months! I had to return to complete the final year of my degree but if I hadn’t had to do that there’s no question I would have been there still!
Can’t believe it’s 10 years ago 🤯…..lots done, lots more to do 💪🏻

Last December I decided to get off the sideline and applied to the Ready to Lead Programme ran by the IFA.
Having zero previous experience with the IFA this programme was a fantastic crash course in how the IFA works and a look at the vast amount of work the IFA does for Irish farmers (members or not!) day in day out both at home and in Brussels.
It was completed over 6 days across 2025 where we got an in depth look at the structure within IFA, the chance to meet TD’s and experience what happens in Leinster house, and travel to Brussels for two days to the IFA office over there where we got a full tour of the European Parliament and got to meet and ask questions of MEP’s, DAFM personnel, the head of DG Agri and people in to name a few.

A great experience with a fantastic group of young, like minded people. If you are thinking about getting involved in ag policy and are fed up shouting from the sidelines like I was and you see this programme advertised for 2026, I would recommend you put your name forward, and show up for your fellow farmers too 💪🏻

Start made to the 2025 grass to milk campaign, grass is the minority of the diet at the minute and who knows how long we’ll keep them out for but we’re way ahead of last year so we’ll take that 💪🏻🐄🐄
