University proudly presents first Contemporary Indonesia art exhibition. This exhibition offers a glimpse into the richness, complexity and dynamism of contemporary Indonesia art. The opening of this exhibition also features a discussion on Indonesian visual art and its relationship with Australia as one of Indonesia’s closest partners. I believe that through visual art, audiences around the world can gain insight into the cultural, social, economic, and political developments of Indonesian society. The exhibition is presented in partnership with REDBASE Australia gallery Sydney and Kabo art collector Melbourne.

"Growing up with a father who was a sports instructor, and a mother and grandmother who were Bugis sarong weavers, I discovered an intriguing connection between the spaces and equipment found in gyms and those associated with traditional weaving tools. The performativity of both reveal a body that is repetitive, disciplined, dynamic, and rhythmic. In this exhibition, gym equipments merge with the construction of traditional weaving tool to create hybrid tools for movement. Audiences are invited to experience the simultaneous shaping of the physical body and a 'second body' (clothing or a sarong). Actions such as pulling, lifting, pressing, and swinging—typical of exercise—transform into weaving motions through the displayed works, which are intentionally designed to be activated."

MENS SARUNG IN CORPORE SANO

"Tumbuh besar dengan Ayah yang seorang instruktur olahraga, juga Ibu dan Nenek yang berprofesi sebagai penenun sarung Bugis, saya menemukan keterkaitan menarik antara ruang dan perangkat olah raga di gym dan alat tenun. Performativitas keduanya menghadirkan tubuh yang repetitif, disiplin, dinamis sekaligus penuh ritme. Dalam pameran ini, perangkat gym bertemu konstruksi alat tenun tradisional menjadi alat gerak yang hibrida. Pengunjung diajak untuk mengalami peristiwa membentuk tubuh fisik dan tubuh kedua (pakaian/sarung) secara bersamaan. Gerakan seperti menarik, mengangkat, menekan, mengayun, dimana peristiwa olah raga bertransformasi menjadi gerakan menenun melalui karya yang dipajang yang sengaja dirancang untuk diaktivasi."
