Η ομάδα των Amalgama Arch. Lab σχεδιάζει τη Villa Roja στα προάστια της Πάτρας, μεταμορφώνοντας μια διώροφη κατοικία και έναν παραδοσιακό πέτρινο ξενώνα σε ένα σύγχρονο οικιστικό περιβάλλον. Η ανακαίνιση αφορά στα δύο βασικά κτίσματα: την κύρια κατοικία, που διαμορφώνει την καθημερινή οικογενειακή ζωή, και έναν ανακαινισμένο πέτρινο ξενώνα με αποθηκευτικό χώρο και ιδιωτικό στούντιο μουσικής. Τα υφιστάμενα στοιχεία που διατηρούνται συνυπάρχουν με τον σχεδιασμό των εσωτερικών χώρων ενώ τα φυσικά υλικά, οι γήινοι τόνοι και τα απαλά χρώματα καθορίζουν τον διαχρονικό χαρακτήρα της πρότασης. Ο σχεδιασμός του τοπίου ενισχύει τη σύνδεση μεταξύ του κτιρίου και του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος που το περιβάλλει.

Amalgama Architectural Lab converts rural Greek farmhouse into contemporary family home - The Greek Foundation Amalgama Architectural Lab transforms a historic farmhouse in Patras into Villa Roja, a contemporary home shaped by natural materials.

VILLA ROJA - LANDSCAPE

Τhe outdoor landscape unfolds effortlessly, shaped by dense greenery and two monumental, centuries-old plane trees that define the character of the site and give it a strong natural identity. Stone-paved paths connect the buildings in an organic flow, leading to a pool area directly linked to the main kitchen and a wooden pergola with barbecue and large dining table—designed for meals, gatherings, and moments of rest.

Between the plane trees, a stone pathway with arched details leads to a generous outdoor barbecue area with a wood-fired oven, a handcrafted table, and deep natural shade—an authentic social hub. Beyond leisure, the landscape embraces self-sufficiency through a small olive grove at the entrance and carefully tended vegetable gardens, reinforcing a sense of abundance, calm, and a grounded way of living.

VILLA ROJA - THE STONE GUESTHOUSE

An early-20th-century stone building with an L-shaped plan, brought back to life through a restoration grounded in respect for its authenticity. Originally divided into two distinct parts—one housing the cellar and a small guesthouse, the other accommodating staff—the building was reimagined to meet contemporary needs. Today, the first section functions as a guesthouse, while the second has been adapted into a storage space and music studio, preserving its original identity.

Stone remains the dominant material—honest and timeless—allowing the building to continue telling its story. The wooden roof was reconstructed without losing its traditional character. Enlarged openings allow natural light to glide across stone surfaces, revealing their warmth and redefining the interior experience.

The guesthouse unfolds as an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area designed for comfort and social interaction, where exposed wood and stone narrate the building’s history. Soft blue details subtly connect the interior with the surrounding landscape. The bedroom offers calm and privacy, while the bathroom balances traditional elements with natural light and modern functionality.

A dialogue between past and present, tradition and contemporary living.

VILLA ROJA - MAIN HOUSE

The two-storey residence is a project shaped gradually over time, tracing its origins back to 1920 and combining layers of history with the needs of contemporary living. Our intervention respected the authentic character of the farmhouse, reimagining it for a modern family of four, with the aim of creating a home that feels warm, functional, and timeless.

The use of natural materials in earthy tones—marble, wood, and cotto—creates a warm and authentic environment inspired by the surrounding landscape and the filtered daylight passing through the trees. Rich materiality is balanced by subtle color accents, allowing natural light gently shape the spaces and strengthen the sense of continuity between interior and exterior.

The shared spaces unfold with a natural flow and a strong sense of hospitality, with the preserved wooden staircase acting as a focal point, the living room offering comfort, and the kitchen forming the heart of everyday life in direct connection with the garden. The private areas are organized to provide calm and privacy, while remaining in constant dialogue with the life of the house.

Each bathroom was designed as a self-contained microcosm with its own distinct identity, inspired by its user. From calm, earthy compositions to more playful or vibrant expressions, the bathrooms function as spaces of personal comfort and daily ritual, offering understated luxury and character throughout the home.

In the suburbs of Patras, nestled within a jungle-like garden and two historic buildings, VILLA ROJA came to life.

A 1920 two-story house, a stone guesthouse, and a once-wild garden were transformed into a harmonious setting where history meets modern living, tradition meets contemporary architecture, and nature flows into everyday life.

This wasn’t just a renovation…it was a full rebirth:
- Redesign of the main house and its private & shared spaces.
- Restoration and renewal of the stone guesthouse.
- Creation of new outdoor areas, kitchens, and gathering spots.
- Transformation of the landscape, pool, and circulation between buildings.

A project that blends the history of the place with contemporary family life.
