Why Greeks Don’t Really Eat Alone: From Ancient Greece to Today
In Greece, eating has traditionally been much more than simply having a meal. From Ancient Greece to modern Greek villages, family homes, tavernas, and restaurants, food has been closely connected with community, friendship, hospitality, and social life.
In Ancient Greece, meals were an important part of social interaction. The symposium, for example, brought people together around food, wine, conversation, music, and philosophical discussion. Eating and drinking were often shared experiences that strengthened relationships and created a sense of belonging.
This tradition continued through the centuries and became especially visible in Greek villages and small communities. Families often lived close to one another, neighbors knew each other, and meals were naturally shared. Food was prepared in larger quantities for the family or the community, and important occasions such as weddings, religious celebrations, harvests, and village festivals brought people together around long tables.
Greek hospitality, known as philoxenia, also plays an important role. Offering food to a guest is traditionally considered an expression of kindness and respect. A visitor is rarely expected to simply sit and eat alone; instead, someone will often join them, offer another dish, pour a drink, or start a conversation.
The traditional Greek taverna reflects this culture perfectly. Greek dishes are often designed for sharing: meze, Greek salad, tzatziki, grilled meats, seafood, vegetables, and other small plates are placed in the middle of the table so everyone can enjoy them together. The meal becomes an opportunity to talk, laugh, exchange stories, and spend time together rather than simply finish a plate of food.
In many Greek families, the tradition of eating together remains strong today. Sunday lunch, family gatherings, celebrations, and meals with friends can last for hours. It is not unusual for a Greek meal to begin with food and continue with coffee, dessert, conversation, and another round of drinks.
Of course, modern Greece is changing. In Athens, Thessaloniki, and other larger cities, busy schedules, work, university life, tourism, and modern lifestyles have made eating alone much more common. People increasingly eat a quick lunch during work, order food at home, or stop at a café or restaurant by themselves.
Still, the cultural idea remains powerful: food is better when it is shared.
From ancient communal meals to village feasts and modern Greek tavernas, eating together has remained an important part of Greek culture. It represents family, friendship, hospitality, community, and connection.
That is why, when you visit Greece, you may notice something special about the way people eat. A Greek meal is rarely just about what is on the plate. It is about the people around the table, the conversation, the laughter, and the time spent together.
For many Greeks, the table is not simply where you eat it is where you connect.

Today Was a Truly Exceptional Greek Experience 🇬🇷
Today’s Tai Chi session with Phaedra and our gastronomic experience with Eleni were something truly special.
We were also delighted to share these experiences with our new friends from Brazil, who now live in Pittsburgh. They were genuinely excited by what we offered, and their reaction reminded us once again of why we are different.
Because not everyone offers the same thing.
And when it comes to experiencing Greece, you should know the difference.
There are people who pretend to be Greek, present themselves as experts on Greece, or simply create a website and social media page and suddenly call themselves “tour guides” or “Greek food experts.”
Be careful.
A beautiful website, professional photographs, and a convincing marketing story do not automatically mean that someone is licensed, qualified, authorized, or genuinely knowledgeable about Greece and its culture.
Before you trust someone with your experience, ask questions.
Who are they?
What are their qualifications?
Are they legally authorized to operate as they claim?
Do they actually live and work in Greece?
Do they understand Greek history, culture, and gastronomy—or have they simply learned how to sell a story online?
And this is particularly important when it comes to food.
STOP EATING LIKE TOURISTS.
You deserve better.
And there is something else that needs to be understood:
A FOOD TOUR IS NOT STREET FOOD.
These are not automatically the same thing.
A food tour should not simply mean walking from one place to another, grabbing a few cheap bites, taking photographs, and calling it a “gastronomic experience.”
Greek gastronomy is much deeper than that.
A genuine Greek food experience should include history, culture, knowledge, tradition, quality, authenticity, and the stories behind the food.
We want you to understand where the food comes from, how recipes travelled through history, how different ingredients and influences became part of Greek cuisine, and why these dishes continue to exist today.
We want you to discover what our grandmothers cooked what they taught their children, what has survived through generations, and why these traditions still have a place on Greek tables today.
Because every dish has a story.
Every ingredient has a history.
Every recipe tells you something about the people, the land, the climate, the communities, and the centuries of influences that shaped Greece.
Greek gastronomy is also connected to an ancient understanding of the relationship between **food, health, balance, nature, and wellbeing**. From **Hippocrates** to other ancient Greek thinkers who reflected on food and health, the idea that what we eat matters has been deeply rooted in Greek thought for centuries.
This is what we want our guests to experience.
Not a tourist performance.
Not a generic meal.
Not a few crumbs on a plate presented as something extraordinary.
And certainly not someone taking your money simply because they have learned how to market themselves.
We believe in generous Greek hospitality, authentic flavors, real stories, cultural knowledge, and food that has meaning.
That is why our experiences are different.
You can copy a menu.
You can imitate a recipe.
You can create a beautiful Instagram page.
You can even call yourself a “Greek food expert.”
But you cannot easily copy genuine knowledge, experience, passion, cultural understanding, and generations of Greek culinary tradition.
So when you come to Greece, don't just eat.
Learn.
Taste.
Ask questions.
Discover.
Understand the story behind your food.
And please, do your homework before booking an experience.
Make sure the people you choose are egitimate, qualified, knowledgeable, and genuinely connected to the country they claim to represent.
Because Greece is not a backdrop for a marketing campaign.
Greek cuisine is not street food with a fancy name.
And a food tour should be much more than a series of cheap tastings.
It should be a journey into Greek culture through food.
That is what we believe in.
That is what we offer.
And that is why our new friends from Brazil, now living in Pittsburgh, were so excited today.
Because they didn't simply eat.
They experienced Greece. 🇬🇷
And that is the difference.
We are not all the same.

August 15 in Greece: The Summer Easter - Χρόνια Πολλά!!!!
August 15, the Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, is one of the most important celebrations in Greece and is often called the Easter of Summer. In Athens, churches hold special services and processions, while the city becomes quieter as many people leave for the islands and their hometowns. Across Greece, however, the celebration takes on an even more traditional character.
On islands such as Tinos, Paros, Naxos and Karpathos, religious ceremonies are followed by lively local festivals, with traditional music, dancing, food and gatherings that often continue late into the night.
In Tinos, thousands of pilgrims visit the Church of Panagia Evangelistria, making the island one of the most important destinations for August 15. The celebration reflects something deeply connected to Greek culture: faith, family, community and tradition coming together.
From the streets of Athens to the smallest island village, August 15 remains a special moment when people return to their roots, celebrate together and experience the unique spirit of a Greek summer.

More Than a Food Tour — A Journey Through the Soul of Greece!!!!!!!!
Athens FoodSteps was never created simply to offer food experiences. It was born from a deeply personal belief: that every meal has a story, every street carries memories, and every traveler deserves something that cannot be found in a guidebook.
For me, no two guests are ever the same.
Each person arrives with their own curiosity, their own dreams, their own reasons for visiting Greece. That is why every experience becomes unique. The connection we create is what transforms a simple walk through Athens into a meaningful memory.
I have always believed that authenticity is the greatest luxury we can offer.
I don't play a role, I don't follow a script, and I never pretend to be someone I'm not. I welcome every guest exactly as I would welcome a friend into my own home with honesty, warmth, generosity, and genuine care. Everything I do comes from love. Not because hospitality demands it, but because this is who I am.
Communication is, and always will be, the most important ingredient.
Food is only the beginning.
Greek traditional cuisine is an extraordinary mosaic of history, geography, culture, and people. Every olive, every herb growing on a mountain slope, every piece of artisan cheese, every loaf of bread, every drop of olive oil carries centuries of knowledge passed from one generation to the next.
But ingredients alone are never enough.
The true magic happens through the people behind them.
The grandmother kneading dough before sunrise.
The cheesemaker preserving recipes older than modern Greece itself.
The beekeeper whose family has cared for the same hillsides for generations.
The fisherman who still reads the sea as his ancestors once did.
These are the people who give life to Greek gastronomy.
When we taste their food, we are tasting their stories.
Greece may appear to be a small country on the map, yet it is immeasurably vast in spirit. Few places in the world have shaped civilization as profoundly. The birthplace of democracy, philosophy, theatre, medicine, and the Olympic Games continues to inspire not only through its monuments but through its everyday life.
Our history is not confined to museums.
It lives in our markets.
It breathes inside family kitchens.
It echoes through neighborhood cafés.
It survives in recipes that have crossed centuries unchanged.
Even today, every region of Greece speaks its own culinary language, shaped by ancient civilizations, Byzantine traditions, Venetian influences, Ottoman heritage, island trade routes, mountain villages, and the endless generosity of the Mediterranean landscape.
This is what I love sharing.
Not only what we eat, but why we eat it.
Not only where we go, but what happened there centuries ago.
Not only the flavors, but the people who continue to protect them.
An Athens FoodSteps experience is not about checking off famous landmarks or visiting places because they appear on social media.
It is about slowing down.
Looking beyond the obvious.
Meeting real people.
Asking questions.
Understanding traditions.
Feeling the rhythm of the city through its neighborhoods, its artisans, its conversations, and its tables.
I encourage every traveler to be curious.
To look beyond appearances.
To seek authenticity rather than convenience.
The real Greece reveals itself to those willing to listen.
Behind every family-owned shop lies decades of dedication.
Behind every recipe hides a story of migration, celebration, hardship, or love.
Behind every glass of wine is a landscape shaped by thousands of years of cultivation.
The greatest souvenir you can take home is not something you buy.
It is understanding.
It is the friendships you build.
It is the conversations you never expected to have.
It is the smile of the baker who remembers your name.
It is discovering that hospitality in Greece is not a service it is part of our identity.
The ancient Greeks called it Philoxenia the love of welcoming strangers.
For us, this is not simply an old tradition.
It is a way of life.
That spirit is at the heart of every Athens FoodSteps tour.
Together, we don't simply explore Athens.
We discover the stories hidden behind its streets, its flavors, its people, and its history.
Because in the end, the most memorable journeys are never only about the places we visit.
They are about the people we meet, the stories we share, and the connections that remain long after the last bite.
Welcome to Athens FoodSteps.
Come as a visitor. Leave feeling like part of Greece.

COMING SOON – A Journey Through 8,000 Years of Greek Gastronomy
For the past year, I have been writing the most meaningful project of my life.
A book that takes you on a journey through 8,000 years of Greek culinary history from prehistoric settlements and the Minoan civilization to Classical Greece, Byzantium, traditional village life, and the kitchens of today.
This is more than a cookbook. It is the story of how Greek food shaped our culture, our traditions, and our identity.
Discover how our ancestors baked bread, produced olive oil, made wine, gathered wild herbs, cooked meat, seafood, legumes, fruits, and vegetables, and how these ancient practices evolved into the recipes we enjoy today.
The book includes hundreds of recipes from every region of Greece, carefully adapted for the modern kitchen while preserving their authentic character. Every recipe tells a story, revealing where it comes from, how it survived through generations, and why it remains part of Greek life today.
This work is the result of extensive research, historical sources, countless conversations, and treasured family memories. Many of the recipes come from my own grandmothers' notebooks, while many others were generously shared by grandmothers from villages across Greece, whose knowledge and traditions deserve to be preserved for future generations.
Every page is a tribute to the women and families who kept Greek culinary heritage alive.
The book will be available in both English and Greek, allowing readers from around the world to discover the extraordinary story of Greek gastronomy.
The cover is currently under development, and I cannot wait to share the final design with you.
This is not simply a book about food.
It is the story of Greece told through bread, wine, olive oil, memories, and recipes that have traveled through thousands of years.
Coming Soon.
