At the height of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s ambitious vision to build the Akosombo Dam a landmark project intended to power Ghana’s future industrial growth two prominent opposition leaders, J.B. Danquah and K.A. Busia of the United Party, were alleged to have travelled secretly to the United States to lobby against the loan needed for its construction.

They are said to have urged U.S. authorities to deny the financing, arguing that Ghana under Nkrumah lacked the political and economic stability required for such a major investment.

Patrice Lumumba was captured after being overthrown in a Belgian- and CIA-backed coup and was secretly flown on 17 January 1961 to the secessionist Katanga province.

There, he and two of his allies were beaten, tortured, and executed by firing squad under the supervision of Katangan officials and Belgian officers.

To conceal the crime, their bodies were later dismembered and dissolved in acid, leaving no trace behind.

This is the historic presidential seat used by Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, during the early years of the nation’s independence.

It was designed by the celebrated Ghanaian artist and state designer Kofi Antubam, who played a key role in shaping Ghana’s early national symbols and visual identity. He also designed other important state regalia, including the Presidential Mace and the State Sword, which are used in official ceremonies of the Republic.

The design of the seat reflects a deep sense of Ghanaian heritage and pride, blending modern state authority with traditional cultural symbols. It prominently incorporates Adinkra symbols, which carry philosophical meanings rooted in Akan tradition, representing values such as leadership, unity, strength, and wisdom.

Together, these works symbolized the birth of a new nation one that was asserting its identity after independence while honoring its rich indigenous culture.

Jerry John Rawlings’ political journey is one of Africa’s most remarkable transformations. After initially coming to power through military coups, he later guided Ghana into democratic rule in the early 1990s.

Following a national push for multi-party democracy, Rawlings accepted reforms that led to the approval of a new constitution in 1992. He then lifted the ban on political parties, retired from the military, and formed the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He went on to win Ghana’s 1992 presidential election and was sworn in as the first president of the Fourth Republic in 1993.

His legacy was further strengthened when he respected constitutional limits and peacefully handed over power in 2000 after two elected terms, solidifying Ghana’s democratic stability.
