ADI vs PDI
You have probably seen both terms when searching for a driving instructor and wondered what the difference actually is.
An ADI is an Approved Driving Instructor.
They have:
π’ Passed all three DVSA qualifying exams
π’ Met the required national teaching standard
π’ Been assessed for instructional ability
π’ A green badge displayed in the windscreen
An ADI is fully qualified and regularly standards checked to make sure their teaching remains at the required level.
A PDI is a Potential Driving Instructor.
They have:
π£ Passed the first two DVSA exams
π£ Permission to teach while training
π£ Not yet passed the final instructional ability test
π£ A pink badge in the windscreen
A PDI is still in training and working towards full qualification.
There is nothing βwrongβ with learning with a PDI. Many are excellent and dedicated.
The key difference is experience, qualification status and assessment level.
When choosing an instructor, ask:
β’ Are you fully qualified?
β’ Do you display a green or pink badge?
β’ How long have you been teaching?
Driving is not just about passing a test.
It is about being taught correctly, safely and confidently from the very beginning.
Always check the badge in the windscreen.
