What we’ll do:
We’ll confirm it is us: if you can see a Reading Council account online you can check it is us. We’ll listen:
We’ll read all messages and look to flag-up problems with the most relevant part of the organisation. We’re keen to hear from you. We’ll say when we’ll monitor each account. We’ll not be online 24-hours a day. But we will say when we’ll be online on each social media account we use. We generally monitor our accounts during working hours, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. If you have an emergency during office hours we recommend you call us 0118 937 3787. If you have an emergency outside of our working hours call our out-of-hours emergency team on 0118 937 3737. We try and respond where we can and when we can help. If possible we’ll respond on the same day but resolving an issue may take longer if we need to find out further information. We don’t always respond to every comment although we always aim to respond to direct service-related queries. We’ll be human and polite
We’ll treat each message with the politeness you’d expect if you were dealing with us face-to-face or on the telephone. We’ll follow people where we can. But this doesn’t mean endorsement. What we’d like you to do in return
We’d like you to be polite. We know that sometimes things don’t go to plan and you’ll want to flag things up with us. But do remember, we’re human and the person monitoring the social media account is only trying to help. So are other people who use social media. We’d like you not be anti-social
We won’t tolerate swearing, threats or abuse online just as we don’t offline. We will remove unlawful or offensive posts. We will not engage with comments that are deliberately designed to be offensive or antagonistic. We won’t always be able to deal with your query on social media. We’ll direct you to other channels instead if this is the case. We will not tolerate personal attacks on an individual on our social media channels. If you’ve a complaint to make against a named person you can do so here on our official complaints page. We’d like you not to spam or advertise. Our social media channels aren’t the place for followers to advertise. Making the same points over and over – otherwise known as spamming – isn’t for our social media. You’ll be better off making a complaint or contacting us another way so we can look into the issue for you. We’d like you to not over-share. If you’ve got an issue we’ll happily look into it. But be careful not to post private information about yourself or others. Of course, most of the time social media works fine but on the rare occasion where you don’t stick to the house rules we reserve the right to delete offending content and block you from contacting us through that route. A key milestone has been reached in the construction of the new Studio Theatre at The Hexagon.
A striking new pedestrian walkway is now in place which will give customers step free access from Queen’s Walk into the new venue and the existing adjoining theatre.
The bridge will take visitors to a new main entrance, foyer and bar at the front of the building, which can be converted into rehearsal, workshop or meeting space.
The Studio Theatre will have a capacity of 200 seated or 300 standing with stalls and a gallery.
Fully accessible lifts and toilets will be available on both levels with direct internal links to the main Hexagon theatre, allowing both venues to run together or independently of each other.
Great progress has also been made on the creation of the new theatre space with the roof in place and the auditorium taking shape.
Council Leader Cllr Liz Terry, Lead Councillor for Culture and Leisure Cllr Jacopo Lanzoni, Chief Executive Jackie Yates and members of the project team, including main contractor Feltham Construction Ltd, marked the installation of the new pedestrian walkway this week.
The construction of the new Studio Theatre is mostly government funded along with Council investment, and it is due to open in spring 2027.
Our Rent Guarantee Scheme supports tenants who are at risk of homelessness by matching them with local landlords. We pay the rent to the landlord each month, and guarantee the tenancy deposit. The main part of our major roads resurfacing programme has now concluded.
Sixteen stretches of road across the borough have been resurfaced, including sections of Friar Street, Bath Road, Henley Road, A33 Relief Road, IDR and George Street in Caversham.
Thank you to all road users for your cooperation and patience throughout.
The works followed the Council’s biggest ever investment in road maintenance in Reading, which has taken place over the last six years.
We will continue to carry out routine highways maintenance and respond to reports of potholes and other road defects as always.

It’s national Cycle to School week next week and it’s not too late to sign up.
You and your children can make a pledge online to do as many of the following as possible:
• cycle to school every day
• discover somewhere new on your cycle
• try a cycle commute to school
• cycle with your family
Submit the form and you’ll receive a free pledge pack by email, filled with activities and resources.

Resurfacing work on Bath Road is now complete and the team are moving on to the Inner Distribution Road (IDR) this evening.
The section of the IDR coming off the A33 northbound will be closed for resurfacing between 7pm today (Friday 2 October) and 1am tomorrow (Saturday 3 October).
A signed diversion will be in place while the works are taking place.

New for Reading: free, joined-up support to help you live well.
From today (1 October), Live Well Reading and West Berkshire bring together help to stop smoking or va**ng, manage your weight, get more active and look after your emotional wellbeing.
You'll have your own wellbeing coach who'll get to know what matters to you, so there's no need to repeat your story to different services.
Live Well is open to anyone aged 16 and over who lives, works or studies in Reading, or is registered with a local GP. You can refer yourself and get support in person, by phone, video, text or app.
