Success means different things to different people. 10 years in and if you don't know by now I'm in reflective mode having set up a now multi award winning skincare brand in November 2016 as a side hustle.
Newsflash: it's still a side hustle and growth for is miniscule and in the grand scheme of the skincare sector - a tiniest slice of the beauty pie.
Big can be beautiful and the likes of founder of Child's Farm are truly inspirational but I'm here to say that being and choosing to be small is beautiful too.
We perhaps need to have a manifesto for small as much as we do big ambitions.

I'm a SFEDI Gold coach and I have rationalised that to scale for me would be dubious at best.

So I never sit bloody still long enough sometimes to take things in...
I'm coming up to 10 years of Skin Elixir next month and I recognise I would have a much bigger audience on here if I was a natural at connecting but I'm just not. I'm a natural at nurturing my customers but not at connecting with others particularly on social media.
I realise this - in fact I spent 9 hours on and off writing about that which you can read all about on my Substack all - see the stories. Disclaimer; it's a long read. (Edit: I've taken the essay down for now!)
Anyway, what I'm getting to is that 10 years in I'm very proud of my small range of products I've formulated and that I make by hand weekly. The true struggle is in growing the right audience and in not diverting attention away from that!
So really the hard work starts from here. Any ideas I'm all ears.

Just a little Sunday musing
I read a statistic recently that really made me pause: only 6% of people actively invest their money, yet almost all of us have splurged mindlessly at some point. It’s easily done. When you break it down, a sum like £10,000 in a year is just £27 a day.
Without dividing our money into dedicated pots or categories, it’s easy to treat our bank accounts like a single pool of infinite funds - until it’s suddenly gone. We find ourselves buying things willy-nilly based on a passing impulse, rather than what we actually value.
I got thinking about this because I’m not feeling particularly sociable at the moment. But the upshot of loving your bed is that it’s a completely free luxury. It is so easy to burn through money when you're out and about, and I sometimes think the constant social pressure we feel is just part and parcel of the same ruse - a system designed to keep us spending and teach us to be entirely disposable.
When we really do a deep dive into our lives, the truth is there is very little we actually need. The rest is simply forced desire, manufactured entirely through relentless advertising designed to make us feel lacking.
Perhaps the biggest problem is that many of us don't give ourselves the time to work out what exactly it is we love, and thus want to invest in. Without that quiet space to reflect, we let the noise of the world dictate our choices for us.
The parallel with the beauty industry is impossible to ignore. Modern skincare is marketed to us in exactly this way - as a series of cheap, impulsive treats to satisfy a forced desire. We are encouraged to buy a random serum here and a trending cream there, piling up plastic bottles filled mostly with water and synthetic fillers. It is the skincare equivalent of burning money on a mindless night out, and it leaves both our bank accounts and our skin barriers completely depleted.
I think this is exactly why I can't be arsed with standard internet adverts. Paid ads are part of that exact same fast, impulse-driven cycle. They rely on catching you in a split second of mindless scrolling to force a quick, transactional sale. It’s a much slower game to grow organically, but I would rather build a community grounded in genuine trust than chase empty clicks.
It is good to have these realisations, even if they come later in life. Better late than never.
