Just a heads up that we do not have a Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art MIMA session today because of Good Friday. We are back at Middlesbrough Town Hall on Monday the 20th at the usual time 4-6pm and MIMA on the 24th. And - yes - we are all still recovering from it all...
No where near recovered from yesterday! Hacking away at a long to-do list. Here's the NEO gang from our Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art Session plugging last night's MY GREAT FOLK show: https://youtu.be/0gJNojM8XiU

North East Opera presents:
MY GREAT FOLK
Monday 30th March 2026 – 7.30pm
Middlesbrough Town Hall
MY GREAT FOLK is led by North East Opera (NEO), a company running weekly music workshops for anyone 'Charging from the Margins'. The show is inspired by the industrial history of Middlesbrough from the early 1800s when labourers from Ireland, Scotland and Wales came to work in various industries of mining, brick making, ship building, iron and steel. And now in recent years Middlesbrough has become the home of people from Iran, Eritrea, Nigeria, Kurdistan, and Syria (to name but a few nationalities), who have found themselves on Teesside and have forged a life for themselves here.
MY GREAT FOLK is a musical celebration of the rich diversity of nationalities living together in Middlesbrough today. Through workshops, taster sessions and rehearsals we have drawn on individuals’ stories and songs, from people both ‘local’ to Middlesbrough and those newly relocated and produced a folk opera.
NEO will be joined by the Middlesbrough Town Hall Community Choir, performing arts students from Middlesbrough College and soloists from many corners of the world and will include songs from the British Isles, Ireland, Namibia, Nigeria, Ghana, Eritrea, China, Italy, Ukraine, India, Pakistan, and Iran. A total of 200 performers will be taking part accompanied by a band of folk and rock musicians, dancers from Navrang Arts as well as poet, Bob Beagrie and the South Bank Brass Band.
Come along to see and hear the real voices of Middlesbrough raised together in celebration of who we are - !
