π§ Delivering IOSH Managing Safely at Lostock Sustainable Energy Plant! β‘
This week, Iβm at the Lostock Sustainable Energy Plant Ltd (LSEP Ltd), delivering the IOSH Managing Safely course for Black & Veatch. As the EPCM contractor, Black & Veatch is overseeing the delivery of this Β£480m Energy from Waste facility, set to generate clean energy for 125,000 homes when operational in 2025.
With large-scale construction projects like this, ensuring a strong safety culture is essential. The IOSH Managing Safely course helps site leaders and supervisors understand their health & safety responsibilities, manage risks effectively, and keep teams safe on site.
Great to be working with professionals committed to safety at such a vital project for sustainable energy in the UK!

In this video, we take a hard look at the sobering statistics of work-related fatalities in Great Britain for the 2023/24 period. A total of 138 workers tragically lost their lives in work-related accidents, highlighting the ongoing dangers present across various industries.
We focus on the industries most affected, with the construction and agriculture, forestry, and fishing sectors continuing to account for the greatest number of worker fatalities. Together, these sectors represent just over half of all work-related deaths in the past year.
We also delve into the main kinds of fatal accidents that have claimed the lives of workers. The leading causes remain consistent: falls from a height, being struck by a moving vehicle, and being struck by a moving object. These three types of accidents alone are responsible for around 70% of the fatal injuries recorded in 2023/24.
Understanding these risks is crucial for all of us. By acknowledging the most significant hazards, we can prioritize safety measures, allocate resources effectively, and work towards preventing future tragedies in our workplaces.

July 31, 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Actβa landmark piece of legislation that transformed workplace safety in the UK. ππ
To appreciate its impact, we must look back at two pivotal 1960s disasters that highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive health and safety regulations. These tragic events not only exposed critical failures in workplace safety but also catalyzed the creation of this vital legislation.
ποΈ Aberfan Disaster (1966) and π₯ Stern Furniture Factory Fire (1968) were key turning points. By reflecting on these tragedies, we understand how they shaped the regulations we rely on today to prevent such incidents.
As we commemorate this milestone, letβs remember the importance of continuous vigilance and improvement in workplace safety.
