Relive a 70’s cult classic with Counterfilms!

Penda's Fen is a surreal, at times nightmarish picture of quaint country provincialism turned upside down. This 70s television play by Alan Clarke challenges the traditional heteronormative England of church on Sundays and cadet drills in school.

Reminiscent of the folk horror films like The Wicker Man, Penda's Fen is a story of a teenagers awakening, charged with demons, ancient rites and sexual energy, rebellion against capitalist state machinery, technocracy, and hidden government control.

Our main character Stephen Franklin has his world unravelled as he is beset by hallucinations and demonic visitations. Just as he is unsettled by noticing the attractiveness of his male school peers, Stephen's journey pivots around learning all he once defined himself by, family god and country, are all a veneer under which the more ancient pagan ways of being lurk beneath.

This is how we can begin to think of English nationalism, underneath the flag waving clingers on to a little England, there exists the opportunity to reconnect to a truer version of an ancient regional heritage.

The Wolf House is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, with uncanny world-building and untraditional horror that breaks all the rules of animation

The Wolf House - or La Casa Lobo in the original Spanish - is an animated horror film like no other. Our protagonist Maria escapes a religious colony in Chile, and takes refuge in an abandoned house in the woods. As the interior begins to transform around her, what starts as a story of liberation soon descends into a nightmarish twist on classic wolf-centric fairy tales, such as The Three Little Pigs and Red Riding Hood.

Maria is a fictional character, but the Colonia Dignidad from which she escapes was an actual German colony established in Chile after World War II. Its inclusion brings a very real layer of horror to this surreal animated horror film, as the cult-like colony (led by former N**i colonel Paul Schäfer) became notorious for human rights violations during the military dictatorship of General Pinochet.

The Wolf House’s production was a labour of love, five years in the making, which blends hand drawn animations with stop-motion scenes built out of paint, paper, tape and furniture. What the film required in time to make, it matched in the amount of space needed, as it was shot (and exhibited) in several galleries and museums around Latin America and Europe. The directors Joaquín Cociña and Cristóbal León considered the space a workshop, not a film set, and offered visitors the opportunity to help them animate.

So excited that we’re back screening this with big audiencess at CULTPLEX for a second year - maybe the start of an annual tradition?! - as part of their brilliant month long STAB horror season.

Yvette Fielding’s iconic series of ghost hunts screened in the early 2000s on ITV2 as celebrity guests including Emmerdale’s The Dingles, McFly, Paul O Grady and Louis Walsh & Boyzone delved into the paranormal with her as guide but when 4 members of Girls Aloud (Nadine opted out as she was too scared) put their lives in Yvette’s hands in 2006 TV magic was made!


Heading into a terrifying haunted house (where they hold a seance) and an abandoned sanatorium Yvette, Cheryl, Sarah and Kimberly (Nicola leaves in a taxi!) scream and swear (“Just tap the fu***ng table” shouts Cheryl who also accuses a spectre of being “anal”) and threaten to get into fights with unseen spooks in Girls Aloud’s unique no nonsense style.

Every screening of this last year was a total hoot, if you came to one let’s do it all again, if you’ve never seen it before this show has to be seen to be believed and best viewed in all packed screen!
