Getting sick when you run a small business alone means your business stops.

Your income stops. Everything stops. And you cannot afford that. So you never stop working.

Employee gets the flu. Takes three days off. Still gets paid. Team covers their work. Business continues.

You get the flu. You have three choices. Work through it and make yourself worse. Take time off and lose £1,350 in revenue. Or watch projects pile up while clients lose patience.

So you work sick. Because stopping is not an option. If you stop working, your business stops. You are the single point of failure.
But working sick makes you sicker. Which means you need more time to recover. Which you still cannot take. So you push through longer. Get worse. The cycle continues.

And the whole time you are paying 40 to 60 percent more for health insurance than employees do. £250 to 300 per month. You pay everything. For the same coverage. And you still cannot afford to use it because using it means not working.

Employees have teams. If one person is out, others cover. The business continues. You? You are the team. You are out, the business is out.

You cannot rest. You cannot recover properly. Because rest means your business stops. And stopping means losing everything you built.

So what do you do? You stop being the single point of failure.

You build a business where someone else can cover when you are sick. Where projects continue when you are out. Where the business does not stop because you stopped.

Integrated teams. Shared workload. No single point of failure.

Employees have this by default. You have to build it deliberately. Form integrated partnerships. Share workload with people who understand your clients. Build redundancy so your health is not your business risk.

Your business should not require you to destroy your health to survive.

Follow for content that will help you break your business free from depending on you alone.

You are stuck at £18K per month. Not because of your skills. Because of the model.

The math: 160 hours per month at £112.50 per hour = £18K. That is your ceiling if you bill every single hour.

But you cannot bill every hour. Client calls, proposals, admin, invoice chasing, learning new tools. All unbillable.

Real billable hours: 110 to 120 per month. Real ceiling: £12K to £13.5K.

You cannot scale past yourself. Cannot take on bigger projects because they require a team and you are alone.

Cannot serve more clients because there are only 160 hours in a month.

Cannot raise rates much higher because the market resists past £150 per hour. You are the bottleneck.

The model caps you. Agencies scale by hiring. SaaS companies scale by automating.

Platforms scale by extracting from others. You trade time for money. More money requires more time. You run out of time. Growth stops.

This is not personal failure. The solopreneur model has a built-in ceiling.

You can optimize, get more efficient, raise rates slightly, cut unbillable hours.

But you cannot break through the ceiling without changing the model.

The model caps you. Deliberately. Platforms want you here. Stuck at £12K to £18K per month.

Enough to stay. Not enough to leave.

You are profitable. You are dependent. You are the perfect customer.

The ceiling is the product.

To break the ceiling: stop trading time for money alone.

Build leverage. Team to share workload. Systems for repeatable processes.

Collective bargaining for shared clients.

The model that got you to £18K will not get you past it.

Most SME founders don’t struggle because they lack ideas.

They struggle because they’re building in isolation.

Too many businesses stay invisible, disconnected, and dependent on systems that were never designed to help them become truly scalable or investable.

That’s exactly what BeeTogether is about.

A room full of founders, operators, investors, and decision-makers having real conversations about growth, systems, visibility, collaboration, and what it actually takes to build a business that compounds over time.

Not another networking event where everyone exchanges LinkedIn profiles and disappears the next day.

A real ecosystem for SMEs that want to grow beyond survival mode.

Your boss is not a person anymore. It is code. And it answers to shareholders, not you.

This is algorithmic management. Algorithm assigns your jobs. Sets your rates. Monitors your acceptance rate.

Decline too many? Fewer jobs shown. Lower priority. Every decision made by code written by shareholders.

This is not new. Factory boss in 1900: controlled your hours, set your wage, monitored output, fired you for non-compliance.

Algorithm in 2026: controls your availability, sets your rates, monitors your metrics, deactivates you for non-compliance.

Same control. Different interface. The model did not change. The boss just became code.

And here is what that code does: extract. Uber takes 25 to 30% of every ride. DoorDash takes 20 to 30% of every delivery. Upwork takes 20% of every project. £100 ride = £30 to platform, £70 to driver before expenses.

The algorithm is not optimizing for your earnings. It is optimizing for platform profit.

You work. They extract. The algorithm makes sure of it.

But driver-owned cooperatives already exist. They take 10%, not 30%. Drivers vote on policies. No algorithm decides your fate. Just collective decisions by the people doing the work.

BeeTogether is where SMEs build the same model. Democratic. Collectively owned. Human-controlled.

Manchester. 15 July 2026. Where algorithms do not run your business. You do. Together.

Same work ethic. Same talent. Completely different outcomes.

Building alone: Constant self-doubt. 70-hour weeks. Googling at midnight.

Building in GoSME: Community validates your approach. 40-hour weeks.

Same starting point. Different ecosystem.

You’re not failing. Building alone is just the hardest way to do this.

This is what happens when SMEs stop competing and start collaborating.

Business owners walked in as strangers. Left as partners. No pitch decks. Just real conversations.

One connection led to a £30K partnership. Another formed an integrated team of four. A strategist met an investor.

Everyone walked in stuck at the same ceiling. Working alone. Competing. Exhausted.
They walked out with teams.

This isn’t networking. This is what collaboration looks like when the system is designed for it, not against it.
Stop competing on platforms designed to keep you small. Start collaborating in ecosystems designed for your growth.

After 5 years of building, what do you actually own?

Nothing. You own a list of monthly subscription charges.
5 years: £63,240 paid. £0 equity built.

Your website on Squarespace. Your data in HubSpot. Your infrastructure on AWS. Your payments through Stripe.

Cancel any of them and your business disappears.

This is not business ownership. This is platform dependency with a business card.

BeeTogether. Where SMEs connect with developers who build infrastructure you own. Custom websites you control.

Databases you can export. Payment processing you negotiate.
Stop renting. Start owning.

This is how the big platforms exploit you

Photos from GoSME's post 15/05/2026

527 proposals for one job.

Rome made gladiators fight each other. The empire profited. The fighters never looked up.

Platforms make freelancers fight each other. The platform profits. The workers never look up.

Same model. Different interface.
Stop fighting each other. Start building together.

Upwork sold you freedom. Fiverr sold you flexibility. They gave you isolation and called it entrepreneurship.
“Be your own boss. Work from anywhere. Build your empire.”

The gig economy promised all of it. What you got: doing everything alone.
You’re the CEO, accountant, project manager, customer service, and sales team. All of it.

When you hire on platforms, you bring on more isolated workers. Who you now manage. Alone.

Freedom without support isn’t freedom. It’s isolation with better branding.
