While you can’t eradicate every worm and would soon run out of effective drugs trying to do so, the aim is to manage them at an acceptable level that doesn’t impact on horse health. 💊🐛 We've talked a lot about resistance to wormers recently because, just like with antibiotics, our wormers are becoming less effective. Worms are developing resistance to the chemicals we have available to treat them and growing numbers are no longer susceptible. This is extremely worrying because without effective treatment our horses are at risk of serious parasitic disease and death.

How does wormer resistance happen? The more we use these drugs and expose the worms to the chemicals, the more quickly resistance develops. So, this is a very serious threat to our horses. But neither is it enough to simply widen the gap between treatments. At around 4-6 weeks from egg to adult, the lifecycle of the small redworm, is one of the quickest which means that a brewing parasite challenge can quickly get out of hand.

📅 Instead we need to be turning to targeted control, using worm egg counts every 8-12 weeks and other diagnostic tools wherever possible to reduce the frequency of chemical doses. This will go a long way to helping to prolong the life of our wormers.

One of the triggers of Colic is lack of adequate Parasite Control. Please do make sure that you have treated or tested over the late Autumn/ Winter months for both tapeworm and encysted Redworm. Foals are at additional risk from high burdens of large roundworm ( Ascarids ). Once you’ve treated or tested ( blood test/saliva test) then continue with routine worm egg counts in spring .

TAPEWORM TESTING

If you tested or treated for tapeworm more than 6 months ago you'll be due to test. It's recommended to:-

- test every 6 months - now is ideal
- worm egg counts are not reliable tests for tapeworm although 'eggs' (proglottids) are seen on occasions
- Diagnosis is performed by an Equisal Saliva Test or Blood Test
- I am an authorised stockist of the tapeworm saliva test kits which are available for £18.95 each or £19.95 posted.
- each kit contains everything needed to collect the saliva sample which is then sent off in a pre-paid envelope to the lab . Lab fees included.

Despite Marmite being wormed twice for tapeworm in the 10 months I have had him I thought I would do an Equisal Saliva Test just to check as I had some concerns re his gut function. The test revealed a borderline result so he will be wormed again shortly to try and get on top of this and I will re-test in a few months time. It may well be that he had a burden historically and the wormer has been effective nonetheless. The Equisal test detects tapeworm antibodies in the saliva which do take time to reduce over a period of a few months following effective worming. Well worth checking though as a tapeworm burden is one of the causes of colic. I am one of the authorised stockist of the kits so I can supply the testing kits if anyone is interested.
