North Manchester RUFC produced a spirited attacking display in what was a friendly development fixture, designed to give valuable game time to a mix of experienced players and those stepping onto the pitch for their very first game - or first start - in rugby.
The match began at a lively pace, with John-Paul Brand opening the scoring early to give North Manchester a 5–0 lead. Broughton responded quickly to level things at 5–5, setting up an open and competitive contest.
North Manchester soon settled, and Tom Bennett crossed for a well-worked try, converted by Curtis Harvey to make it 12–5. Broughton added a penalty to reduce the deficit to 12–8, but from there, North began to take control.
Mike Moore was central to the attacking momentum, scoring twice - one converted by Curtis Harvey - to extend the lead to 24–8. Jamie Parker then added a try before finishing off another excellent move, again converted by Curtis Harvey, pushing the score out to 36–8.
Beyond the scoreboard, the fixture was a great opportunity for development, with several players making their rugby debuts and others earning their first starts, all stepping up impressively and contributing to the performance.
Man of the Match went to vice-captain Lewis Barnes for a series of strong carries and, in his own words, “running like a fleeting gazelle” throughout the game.
A special mention also goes to Mike Duffy, who at 69 years young rolled back the years with a memorable cameo against his old club, taking to the field for five minutes in the second half and showing tremendous passion and commitment.
Dick of the Day was awarded to John-Paul Brand, who attempted the famous Chris Ashton “Ash Splash” finish, only to drop the ball over the line in what would have been a certain try.
Unfortunately, shortly after the restart, the match was abandoned following a serious knee injury to one of Broughton’s players. Everyone at North Manchester RUFC sends their very best wishes to the injured player - we hope for a full and speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch soon.
