🌌 35 years ago Helen Sharman became the first Brit in space 🌌

In May 1991 Helen launched into orbit on a mission to the Mir Space Station, making history in the process. Today we collaborated with Piccadilly Lights in the heart of Piccadilly Circus, celebrating that out-of-this-world achievement with Helen herself.

You can see Helen’s real spacesuit from that historic mission in the Science Museum’s new Space gallery, which brings together remarkable objects to tell the story of space exploration. Best of all, it’s free to visit!

Two spacecraft. Two generations of spaceflight. One date in history. 🚀

On 18 May 1969, Apollo 10 launched — NASA’s final rehearsal before the Moon landing. It carried the command module that would later travel around the Moon.

Exactly 22 years later, on 18 May 1991, Helen Sharman launched aboard Soyuz TM-12 to become the first Briton in space. 🧑‍🚀

Today, you can see both the Apollo 10 command module and Helen Sharman’s spacesuit in the Space gallery at the Science Museum.

Together, these objects help tell the story of humanity’s journey beyond Earth. 🌍

Why not come and explore the Space gallery for yourself.
