And so we come to the nineteenth and final story reveal.
The Silence Between Letters takes us back to Kythera during the war years.
Eleni and Andreas are young, engaged and imagining the life still ahead of them when war intervenes. He is called away. What remains between them are letters: written carefully, delayed, censored, treasured and, eventually, unanswered.
Then comes one final fragment:
“Wait for me. Even if the sky breaks.”
It is a story about love interrupted by history, about waiting without certainty, and about the objects and words that can carry memory long after the people themselves have disappeared.

It felt right that this should be the final story I revealed from Olive Leaves — Stories of Islands, Memory and Return. At its heart, the collection has always been about what we carry with us: places, people, promises, losses and the strange persistence of home.
As publication approaches, I am also still rather overwhelmed by the generosity of Dame Joanna Lumley, who read an advance selection and allowed me to share her words:

STORY REVEAL 18 — BITTER FRUIT
It was not the loss of lemons that bit at him.
In a quiet Greek village, Giorgos watches strangers take fruit from the lemon tree his father planted after the war.
At first it is irritation. Then resentment. Then something darker.

Story Reveal 16 — The Sisters

Two sisters. One mother. And two very different versions of the woman they have just lost.
After their mother’s death, Danae and Eirini find themselves back together in the family apartment in Nea Smyrni, surrounded by the small relics of an ordinary life: old photographs, handwritten recipes, a much-loved gardenia, a missing portrait and memories neither sister remembers quite the same way.
What begins with resentment slowly becomes something more complicated. As they uncover fragments of their mother’s private world, they begin to understand that neither of them possessed the whole truth about her — and perhaps neither has understood the other either.
A story about family, inheritance, memory and reconciliation, and about the strange way the people we lose can sometimes bring us back to one another.

HELENE AND PARIS

They loved each other.
