Stuart R. Fleming announces new short story collection, Olive Leaves and Concrete Streets, coming later in the summer!
Following the warm reception of Greek Odyssey of the Heart, author Stuart R. Fleming returns with Olive Leaves and Concrete Streets, a richly textured collection of short stories inspired by Greece in all its contrasts — island and city, beauty and hardship, memory and reinvention.
Set across Kythera, Athens, Piraeus, Hydra, Pangrati, Kypseli and beyond, the collection explores the lives of characters shaped by love, loss, family, exile, ageing, desire and hope. From the ritual sea-bathing women of “Bagno” to the restored grandeur of “Villa Olivia,” from the comic romance of “The Elixir of Pangrati” to the emotional shadows of “Kypseli’s Pension,” Fleming’s stories reveal a Greece that is intimate, human, funny, wounded and full of light.
Why this collection?
Because Greece is not one story. It is island silence and city noise, old women in the sea and young lovers in cafés, family houses, ferry ports, gossip, grief, history and laughter. I wanted to capture the Greece behind the postcard.
What does the title mean?
Olive Leaves and Concrete Streets reflects the two Greeces I love: the rural, timeless Greece of trees, stone, sea and memory — and the urban Greece of Athens, apartment blocks, balconies, traffic, bakeries, cafés and complicated lives.
How does it connect to Greek Odyssey of the Heart?
Greek Odyssey of the Heart was my love letter to Greece. This collection goes wider and deeper. It opens the door to many lives, many voices, and many different kinds of life.
What kind of readers will enjoy it?
Readers who love Greece, of course — but also readers who enjoy human stories about family, reinvention, desire, ageing, secrets, resilience and the strange comedy of being alive.
What is the emotional heart of the book?
That people are never just one thing. They are funny and broken, proud and kind, foolish and brave. Greece gives them the stage, but the real landscape is the human heart.

Olive Leaves and Concrete Streets by Stuart Fleming is a powerful new collection of short stories set across Greece’s islands and cities, weaving together lives shaped by love, migration, memory, longing, and the search for belonging. Moving between the sunlit villages of Kythera, the crowded streets of Athens, and the shifting worlds between tradition and modern life, these stories capture Greece in all its beauty, contradiction, warmth, and humanity.
Some stories are tender, some bittersweet, others quietly humorous — but all are rooted in the people, conversations, landscapes, and emotional truths that define contemporary Greek life. From wartime separations to modern romances, hidden desires to family loyalties, Olive Leaves and Concrete Streets is both a love letter to Greece and a deeply human portrait of those who call it home — or dream of doing so.

Greek Odyssey of the Heart — From Sail to Soil
By Stuart R. Fleming
Learning to Sail: Corfu, 2008
Some journeys begin in the smallest of ways. For me, it started on Corfu in 2008, when I first learned to sail. What I imagined as a holiday pastime became a revelation. Standing at the helm, salt spray in the air, I discovered a freedom that would change my life forever.
A Boat Called Samantha
The following year, at Alimos Marina near Athens, I bought Samantha. She was beautiful, seaworthy, and full of promise. With her, I ventured into the Ionian Saronic and Cycladic seas, discovering Greece not as a tourist, but as a sailor.
Dawn light on Poros, the laughter of fishermen in Methana, the windswept cliffs of Amorgos — every voyage brought new lessons. It was through these journeys that I came to understand filoxenia: not just hospitality, but a generosity of spirit that is uniquely Greek.
Kythera Beckons
In 2011, Samantha carried me south to Kythera. I arrived at Agia Pelagia at dawn: houses tumbling toward the sea, jasmine in the air, bells echoing from Panagia Despina. I thought I was visiting. In truth, the island was claiming me.
The Farmhouse and the Olives
Two years later, I bought a farmhouse in the hills. Whitewashed walls, soft green shutters, and — most precious of all — an olive grove which needed work.
The trees taught me patience. In harvest season, neighbours spread nets, combed branches, and showed me how to gather fruit the right way. Evenings ended with bread, wine, and laughter beneath the trees. The first taste of oil, fresh and peppery on bread, was unforgettable.
Through those olives, I began to understand the seasons: spring bursting with wildflowers, summer humming with cicadas, autumn renewing the soil with rain, and winter drawing us close by the fire.
Living the Seasons
The farmhouse became my anchor, a threshold between past and present. To live here was to join the continuum of generations who had worked, celebrated, and mourned on this soil. Greece was no longer a backdrop to my story — it had become my muse.
Writing the Odyssey 2025
From fragments in notebooks grew a novel: Greek Odyssey of the Heart. It is not just a love story; it is a tribute to the islands, the olive trees, and the people who gave me a voice. A gathering of people and like minds against a vibrant ever changing Greek backdrop.
Sometimes, the greatest odyssey is not measured in miles, but in how deeply a place roots itself in your soul. For me, that place will always be Greece.
