Ransomware is a type of malicious software designed to encrypt a victim's files or lock them out of their computer system or network. Once the files are encrypted or access is blocked, the attacker typically demands a ransom payment from the victim in exchange for a decryption key or to regain access to their system.
Here are some key characteristics and details about ransomware:
🔐 Encryption: Ransomware encrypts files or entire systems using strong encryption algorithms. This makes it nearly impossible for victims to access their data without the decryption key.
🔐 Ransom Demand: Attackers usually demand a ransom payment, often in cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin, to maintain anonymity.
🔐 Time Limit: Attackers may impose a time limit for the ransom payment, adding pressure on the victim to pay quickly. If the deadline passes, the decryption key may be permanently deleted.
🔐 Variety: There are different types of ransomware, including file-encrypting ransomware (which locks individual files), disk-encrypting ransomware (which locks the entire hard drive), and screen-locking ransomware (which prevents access to the computer's graphical interface).
🔐 Delivery Methods: Ransomware can be delivered through malicious email attachments, infected websites, malicious downloads, or vulnerabilities in software or operating systems.
🔐 Impact: Ransomware attacks can have severe consequences for individuals and organisations. They may result in data loss, financial losses due to ransom payments, operational disruptions, and damage to an organisation's reputation.
Ransomware attacks have become increasingly prevalent and sophisticated, making cybersecurity awareness and preparedness crucial for individuals and organisations alike.
