The UK is part of a fast-tracked process that could narrow our protections against inhumane treatment and state intrusion into family life.

These rights are vital for migrants and migratised who people facing detention, removal, and surveillance.

There's no evidence for restricting these protections - only a political narrative that treats migrants as expendable.

We refuse these measures. Human rights belong to us all.

Decolonisation looks like abolishing borders and the systems of oppression, such as and , that they uphold. It also looks like putting an end to the colonial legacies that continue to displace people across the world and defying the colonial narratives surrounding migrants and migration.

Today, the Government has announced “crackdowns” on those without permission to work while gleefully congratulating itself for ramping up cruel and .

The timing of this announcement which criminalises is particularly tragic and pertinent following the murder of people seeking asylum in Dunkirk overnight. This kind of dehumanising policy and rhetoric we see spouted by the Government today feeds escalating anti-migrant hate.

At the Migrants’ Rights Network, we’ve been campaigning for greater transparency around opaque immigration raids, surveillance and deportation policies. We call on the Government to abandon authoritarian measures which intimidate racialised and migrant communities.

Our thoughts go out to the loved ones of those who have died at the Dunkirk camp, we cannot begin to comprehend the grief you must be feeling at this horrific time.

We extend our solidarity to the Syrian people, including Syrians in our community, in their ongoing struggle for freedom, and we share in the Syrian people’s hopes for a better future free from all forms of oppression.

Despite the end of Assad’s cruel regime, there are a number of imperialist forces, such as Israel, the US and Turkey, that continue to inflict violence and suffering on the Syrian people. For those wishing to leave, the announcement that the UK, and multiple countries across Europe, will not process their asylum applications, is utterly cruel. Alongside the mental anguish and distress this will cause, it also infringes on their right to seek .

If the UK Government truly cared about Syrians, it would allow them the dignity of choice: to decide on their own terms where they want to live- whether that be the UK, , or somewhere else.
