Some artworks will grow in value and some won't. How can you tell?

No matter how high or low the price is, it is only reasonable to wonder if an artwork you are purchasing will preserve its value down the road and may be even show some growth. After all, art is among those few acquisitions that we make that will not automatically start depreciating. And with a bit of analysis, you can get a good picture of what might happen in future with the artist.

If I could highlight 3 biggest signs that usually lead to the market growth, I would say:

-unique voice
-strong gallery support
- visibility

One big change that we have seen recently: artists no longer have to wait decades to get recognition and success. And the earlier we spot the future star, the stronger value growth we can expect.
I am sharing all my insights as to what helped experienced collectors gain value for their works and how can we apply it for any level of art collecting.

I’ve dedicated a separate module on the best practices of ART PURCHASE AND INVESTMENT to help art enthusiasts make informed decisions every time.

Do you know what the first thing all art valuers do the moment they get hold of a painting? 🖼⁣⁣
⁣⁣
They turn it around 🤭 By simply looking at the back of an artwork with its many marks and inscriptions, we can get many clues and hints to discover:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
🔎 The origin of the work⁣⁣
🔎 Where it has traveled over time⁣⁣
🔎 Who owned it⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Of course, these facts will have a direct influence on an artwork’s value in different ways.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Through the dART METHOD programme, I will show you how to read the back of an artwork, as well teach you about the other factors that drive an artwork's value 🎯⁣⁣

It does not matter what the artist used to create their art. What matters is – do we like it? ⁣

Since the beginning of the 20th century – when Marcel Duchamp challenged the role of materials used in art, things have been messy. Artists have been highly creative at using all sorts of objects in their artworks. Some of the more acceptable things have been everyday objects, recyclables, perishable materials. For contemporary art – it is all the same as long as the artist’s message is loud and clear. ⁣

The question is though – what does the market think? In terms of market prices, there is rarely any intrinsic value in the artworks, so other factors must be considered. And looking at the current auction sales results, these factors play a major role. ⁣

However, in the recent years I have been delighted to see the return of figurative traditional art, with contemporary artists going back to oil, acrylic and pencil as their primary tool and working with canvas and paper. Traditional medium with a contemporary twist is what I love most. Some of the contemporary female artists have been particularly active here. Among my favourite names are Julie Curtiss, Genieve Figgis, Katherine Bernhardt 🎨 ⁣

At the end of the day, as long as we like the object, it doesn’t matter what materials were used to create it 🎯⁣

The art industry has always seen a reluctantance to move online...⁣⁣
⁣⁣..after all, art is an experience which is best consumed in real life and shared with like-minded people.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
However – the current situation has left galleries with no choice but to adapt to the current realities and, at least for now, offer online alternatives 🌍⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I’ve been amazed to see international art market players going online so quickly and offering variety of shows, exhibitions and artists’ studios visits.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So – whilst we are waiting for the world to get back to normal, let’s start enjoying contemporary art online. I’ve selected the latest shows that have opened digital viewing rooms. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Best enjoyed after work with a glass of wine.⁣⁣

What is art for?⁣ 💭

‘...We need pretty things close to us not because we are in danger of forgetting the bad stuff but because terrible problems weight so heavily on us that we are in danger of slipping into despair or depression. That’s why prettiness matter. It’s an emblem of hope, which is an achievement...⁣
⁣.It’s hope - bottled and preserved - waiting for us when we need it...’⁣

I didn’t think of starting my own venture until that trip to Monaco in 2019.⁣

It was my 6th year at Gurr Johns, a London and New York based art valuation company, and my team and I were engaged to value a large private art collection. That was business as usual - almost - except that this time it was a home that was rarely visited by the collector. The house pretty much acted like a museum, with barely any visitors. ⁣
We walked through the door - something didn’t feel right. ⁣

Surrounded by an astonishing amount of high value art, from Pablo Picasso to Dale Chihuly, it didn’t feel alive or exciting. It felt like the space had frozen in time, there was no one to enjoy the art, it was simply filling the walls and gathering dust.⁣

That was the day I realised it’s time for something new. Valuing existing art collections gave me an incredible amount of insight, but what is even more exciting is creating them. This process of browsing, discovering and selecting artworks from exciting emerging and contemporary artists is a special feeling, as you anticipate where the career of each artist may go. And now I am determined to help others navigate and enjoy the art world in the same way, whether it’s by better understanding the art exhibitions you visit, to making your first art purchase. ⁣

That’s why I started the dART METHOD - www.dartmethod.com⁣

Art valuation is not guesswork. ⁣

You can hit the valuation bullseye with the dart every single time. 🎯 ⁣

Knowledge of the industry combined with careful analysis of a work guarantees accurate results, but this is not something that market insiders like to share. ⁣

The art world has always been shrouded in mystery – but it is now time to think if that is the way forward. I believe that clarity is essential to navigate this complex web and I would like to show you how to achieve it. ⁣

If you have been observing the contemporary art market or visting art exhibitions, yet having mixed feelings, asking questions or having doubts – that is not surprising. There is a lot going on and it’s time to understand it. ⁣

I’ve structured all the essential knowledge you need in order to start navigating the market and valuing art based on a 4-step programme. Packed with real life examples and actionable tools, all that is required is to start the practice – something that we will do together within the dART METHOD platform. ⁣
