MSPSL is a simple routine that can help you plan your approach to junctions, roundabouts and other hazards.
M – Mirrors: check what’s happening behind and around you.
S – Signal: signal clearly if it will help other road users.
P – Position: move into the correct road position or lane.
S – Speed: adjust your speed early so you stay in control.
L – Look: make effective observations before continuing.
The important thing is not to rush through the routine. Give yourself enough time to see what’s happening and make a safe decision.
Good planning usually means smoother, safer driving.

🚗 Roundabouts become much easier when you plan early.
One of the biggest things I work on with learners is getting them to read the roundabout before they arrive at it.
Look ahead for the signs and road markings, work out which exit you need, then choose the appropriate lane early. This gives you more time to concentrate on your speed, observations and the traffic already on the roundabout rather than making a last-second decision.
The Highway Code also advises adjusting your speed and position to suit the traffic conditions.
Plan early, and give yourself time to make a safe decision.

🚗 Quick driving tip – keep a safe gap
Following too closely gives you much less time to react if the vehicle in front suddenly slows down or stops.
The Highway Code recommends leaving at least a 2-second gap on high-speed roads. In wet conditions, the gap should be at least doubled, and even more space is needed in icy conditions.
A simple way to check your gap is to pick a fixed point, such as a road sign, and count the time between the car in front passing it and you reaching the same point.
Giving yourself more space means more time to see, plan and react safely.
