Brian McFeely aka Elph to mqny left his mark across Edinburgh in a way few artists ever truly do.
For more than 30 years he was part of the fabric of the city’s graffiti and street art culture, creating work that was unmistakably his own. His signature characters, bold lines, abstract forms and references to folklore transformed walls, forgotten corners and public spaces This particular piece has hung proudly in our home for years raw, confronting, funny, uncomfortable and unmistakably Elph. Like so much of Brian’s work, it carried a strange honesty to it; flawed humanity laid bare with humour, vulnerability Brian had a rare ability to create characters that felt both mythical and deeply personal. His lines were loose yet deliberate, chaotic yet thoughtful. his work always carried the same unmistakable style one that belonged entirely to him.Brian was part of a generation that helped shape Edinburgh’s underground creative spirit. He inspired artists, skaters, musicians, outsiders and friends alike people who recognised in him both immense talent and complete authenticity. His work never felt manufactured or detached from real life. It belonged to the streets, to the people who passed it every day, and to the city that became his canvas. This piece now carries an even heavier weight for us. The words written into it feel painfully poignant today, but also remind us how deeply Brian observed the world around him its absurdity, its pressures, its loneliness and its beauty. We will treasure this work always, not simply because it was made by an important artist, but because it carries part of Brian’s spirit within it.
Rest easy Elph you legend.
Edinburgh will continue to see you through the walls, characters and your stories for many years to come.💔
