Volunteers week, day 2. Here is Rebecca Chalmers story.

I joined as a Ravelrig volunteer in 2022 when my daughter Bryony wanted to sign up. I was lucky to be able to use volunteering leave and flexible working hours offered by my employer to join the Friday morning team. I made good friends and enjoyed spending time at the stables, having spent most of my spare time as a child with horses.

When trustee positions became available in 2024 including a need for a trustee with HR experience, I put my name forward. I have been the HR Director for the Scottish Ambulance Service and The State Hospital, Carstairs in recent years, so this seemed like a good match. I have enjoyed the last two years being involved in the commissioning of the new arena, recruiting Nikki, our manager, and supporting the official opening of the arena by HRH the Princess Royal last year.

Last month I was appointed as RDA County Chair for Edinburgh, Fife and Lothians. The post has been vacant for a few years, so I put my name forward as I am interested in learning more about the wider aims of RDA UK, and helping Ravelrig to contribute to achieving these. I am hoping this will be positive for the profile of the Ravelrig group and am
looking forward to getting to know the other local groups in the coming months,

Please take a moment to hear about volunteering with Riding for the Disabled.

We coach, volunteer in lessons, look after the horses, fundraising, clean (including the toilets) , look after the facilities, gardening, make promotion presentations, keep Facebook up to date and lots more. These are just some of the the practical things we do. The emotional things we do are far reaching too.

Day 1 of volunteers week. We celebrate the commitment of our volunteers at Edinburgh & Borders Region RDA Regional Qualifiers yesterday. It was a great result following weeks of preparation.

A wee message from Nikki our Manager.

“Afternoon all, some of you may be aware that we are taking Thumper and Oreo along with 6 of our participant riders to the RDA Regional Qualifiers this Sunday at SNEC (Oatridge Agricultural College near Broxburn).

If you would like to come and support us we will have riders on between 10am and 13.10pm on the day.

Would be lovely to see the Ravelrig Purple at SNEC supporting. It is a great event to watch and see the other groups in our region also.

You don't need to book at all just turn up there is plenty of parking and access.

Good Luck all Team Ravelrig 🙂”
