This World Mental Health Day, we're reminding everyone across Kilmac that sometimes the most important thing we can do is simply listen.

The theme for 2026 is “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change” recognising that people's experiences matter and their voices should be heard.

Construction can be a demanding industry, and we all have a role to play in creating an environment where people feel comfortable speaking up, asking for support and checking in on one another.

As a proud supporter of the Lighthouse Charity, Kilmac continues to help raise awareness of the free and confidential support available to construction workers and their families across emotional, physical and financial wellbeing.

From work placement to education and employment for David.

For us, meaningful social value isn’t about simply delivering a two-week work placement and ticking a box. It’s about what happens next.

David joined Kilmac for two weeks after leaving school, interested in civil engineering but unsure which career path was right for him.

We gave him experience both on site and within our office, allowing him to explore different areas of the business. By the end of his placement, David had identified the commercial route, particularly Quantity Surveying, as the direction he wanted to pursue.

But the support didn’t stop when his placement finished.

We continued working with David to explore his options and supported his progression to Fife College, where he has now secured a place to study an HNC in Quantity Surveying.

Kilmac has also offered David paid employment two days per week alongside his studies, allowing him to continue building real industry experience while gaining his qualification.

2-week placement → Career pathway identified → HNC place secured → Paid employment → Continued development.

This is what social value should be about: creating opportunities that lead somewhere.

A placement is valuable, but turning that opportunity into education, employment and a potential long-term career in our industry is where the real impact lies.

We are proud to announce that Kilmac has signed the Armed Forces Covenant, demonstrating our commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community.

By signing the Covenant, we are making a commitment to recognise the value that serving personnel, reservists, veterans and Armed Forces families can bring to our business and the wider construction and civil engineering industry.

As an employer, we are committed to building an inclusive workforce and opening pathways into our industry for people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.

We are proud to add our name to the organisations across the UK supporting the Armed Forces Covenant and look forward to developing our commitment further.

Proudly supporting those who serve.

🎓 Inspiring the Next Generation into Construction

It’s been a busy week for the Kilmac team, attending careers events across Fife and Tayside!

On Tuesday, we were delighted to attend Dunfermline High School, followed by a visit to Perth High School yesterday, speaking with pupils about the wide range of career opportunities available within civil engineering and the wider construction industry.

It’s always encouraging to meet young people who are already considering careers in civil engineering, as well as having the opportunity to introduce others to pathways they may not have previously considered from groundworks and engineering to quantity surveying, plant operations and apprenticeships.

Engaging with schools is an important part of our commitment to developing the future workforce. By giving young people an insight into the industry, the different routes available and what a career in construction can look like, we hope to help them make informed decisions about their next steps.

A big thank you to Dunfermline High School and Perth High School for inviting us along, and to everyone who stopped by to speak with the Kilmac team.

We look forward to continuing to work with schools and education partners across Scotland to create meaningful pathways into our industry.

STEM Week | Building the Future from the Ground Up 🏗️

Last week Matthew MacDougall and Stevie Ritchie headed to Blairgowrie High School to deliver our “Build It From the Ground Up” STEM Challenge, giving pupils a hands-on introduction to the world of groundworks and civil engineering.

The session started by looking at everything that has to happen before a new building can open - from earthworks, drainage and foundations through to roads, footpaths, services and landscaping. Pupils then headed outdoors for a Site Detective Challenge, identifying drainage, levels, accessible routes, potential hazards and sustainability features around their own school.

Back in the classroom, the pupils became the Kilmac project team, tasked with designing the infrastructure for a new school development. Working to a £500,000 budget, teams had to plan roads, parking, safe pedestrian routes, drainage and attenuation, cycle storage and green space while considering safety, accessibility and sustainability.

Just like a real construction project, things didn’t quite go to plan!

Teams were given an unexpected client challenge and had to adapt their designs, solve the problem and manage the impact on their project before pitching their final solution.

Throughout the session, pupils took on roles including Project Manager, Engineer, Quantity Surveyor, Site Manager and Environment & Community, helping demonstrate just how varied the career opportunities within construction can be.

A huge thank you to Matthew and Stevie for delivering the session and sharing their experience, and to Blairgowrie High School for welcoming us.

At Kilmac, we’re passionate about creating opportunities for young people to engage with our industry, develop practical STEM skills and discover the many different career pathways available within construction.

MEMBERS of the Kilmac team ensured Perthshire’s Rattray Beaver Run passed off without a hitch.

Our HR manager Kerry Clark, who took part last year, deserves full marks for helping Blairgowrie and District Rotary Club members and other volunteers organise an event which attracted more than 120 runners.

Competitors took part in a scenic but challenging Half Marathon, or 10K run, which raised much needed funds for chosen charities CHAS, Andy’s Man Club, Happy to Chat, Women’s Walk and Talk, Mantalk and the Grief Hub.
With the event in doubt last year after more than 30 years, Kilmac stepped in with a sponsorship package to secure its future.

And the Rotary Club was delighted to build on the foundations created by Kilmac.

“It was a great turn-out in Sunday, well up on last year and we are confident that with the support of Kilmac the Rattray Beaver Run will continue to go from strength to strength and raise much needed money for a string of fine causes,” said Rotarian Bob Ellis.

“Many thanks to all the volunteers who ensured all went smoothly on the day. Without their input the event would not be possible.”

👖 Jeans for Genes – Together We Made a Difference! 💙

On Friday, Team Kilmac swapped their usual workwear for denim as we came together to support the Jeans for Genes campaign.

It was fantastic to see colleagues across our offices and sites getting involved, but what made the day even better was the support from our wider supply chain and partners who joined us in raising awareness for such an important cause.

A huge thank you to Kenton Black, Sphere Solutions, Campion, Search and Caval, along with everyone across Kilmac who took part, donated and helped us spread the word. A special thank you also goes to Campion for their very generous donation towards the campaign.

Jeans for Genes raises vital funds to support individuals and families affected by genetic conditions, and we're proud to have played our part.

A brilliant example of what can be achieved when our people, partners and supply chain come together for a shared cause.

Thank you to everyone who got involved! 👏👖

Developing Future Talent: Rhys Wilson

We were delighted to welcome Rhys Wilson, formerly of Grove Academy, back to Kilmac for a further work placement within our Commercial Department.

Following his previous time with the business, Rhys returned to build on the knowledge and experience he had already gained. During the placement, he supported our commercial teams with their day to day activities, gaining further insight into the important role the department plays in the successful delivery of civil engineering and groundworks projects.

The placement gave Rhys another opportunity to develop his practical skills, confidence and understanding of the commercial career pathways available within the construction industry. It also allowed him to gain valuable experience within a professional working environment and learn directly from colleagues across the business.

At Kilmac, we recognise the value of providing meaningful and progressive work placements. By welcoming young people back for further experience, we can help them build on their existing skills, deepen their understanding of the industry and make informed decisions about their future careers.

Rhys begins university on Monday, and we would like to thank him for his contribution to the team and wish him the very best of luck as he starts this exciting new chapter.
