Christopher was admitted on 30/04, weighing 291g. Christopher, a juvenile (teenager) was found out in the daytime from the Fairwater area in Cardiff.
He was dehydrated and emaciated. A few ticks were removed and we found high burdens of Capillaria (roundworm) and Crenosoma (lungworm) but after fluid therapy, pain relief and antibiotics, he's now 615g.

The biggest reason hedgehogs are admitted is dehydration (lack of water) then lack of food (emaciation). If you can do only one thing to help, put out clean water for the wildlife in your area. If you’re able to offer food too then meaty cat, kitten or puppy food is perfect (not in gravy or with added milk).

Christopher has been released back to the garden where he was found where he will be support fed.

Meet Raymond! 🦔💚

Raymond was admitted on 24/05, 390g. He was found out during the daytime, which is often a sign that a hedgehog is struggling and needs help.

After an assessment, Raymond was found to be emaciated and dehydrated. Further testing revealed he was carrying a heavy parasite burden, testing positive for Capillaria, Crenosoma and fluke.

Since arriving at Caerphilly Hedgehog Rescue, Raymond has been receiving intensive supportive care, hydration, nutritious food and treatment for his parasites.

Despite a difficult start, Raymond has responded well to treatment and is making good progress. He now weighs over 460g and continues to gain strength every day. ❤️

There will be a short self-guided farm walk (around 15 minutes) where you'll be able to see our sunflower and pumpkin patch and, with a bit of luck, some of the cows and sheep in the surrounding fields. 🤞

Please note: the walk is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs and the ground is likely to be muddy, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

Tyson’s brother has arrived!!
Meet Bruno! 🦔💙

Admitted on 19/05, 174g. He was found in the same location as Tyson, and we believe he may be Tyson’s brother. Sadly, there was no sign of mum.

After an assessment, Bruno was found to be underweight, for a hoglet of his age, and in need of specialist care.

Bruno is toileting on his own and has been receiving specialist care, formula feeds and puppy mousse to help him grow strong and healthy.

He is progressing well and now weighs over 300g. ❤️

We’ve been busy reading through the handbook and making sure everything is organised so the day runs as smoothly as possible for everyone coming along.

We see lots of hedgehogs that are dehydrated. In this warm spell, it is even more important to have shallow bowls of fresh, clean water out for wildlife.

Have you got liquid refreshment available? They'll thank you for it!

RELEASE: 15/05

Remember Dan (admitted on 05/04, 657g)? He was found out in the daytime entrapped in a street drain. Luckily, the finder's dog alerted them to it.

Our lead carer, Dave, went to the rescue and managed to get him out safely by prising the drain cover up. He was in an awful state nails were worn right down, stinking dirty and smelly.

Healthy, clean, parasite free and up to weight, Dan was released to a fab support garden with a nest box ready.
