🌾 Grass seed season is here, and we’re seeing a lot of cases at the practice! 🐶

As the weather warms up, grass seeds become a real hazard for our dogs. These tiny seeds can easily work their way into paws, ears, eyes, noses, and even under the skin, causing pain, infection, and sometimes requiring surgery to remove.

Meet Summer, who belongs to our nurse Michelle. Despite Michelle’s best efforts to keep Summer’s ear safe from these pesky seeds with this fetching headgear, she still managed to get a grass seed embedded deeply into her ear canal. This required a sedation to safely remove it.

Keep an eye out for signs such as:
🐾 Excessive licking or chewing at a paw
👂 Head shaking or scratching at an ear
👁️ Squinting or a swollen eye
🤧 Sneezing or nosebleeds
😣 Sudden limping or swelling

After every walk, especially through long grass, take a few minutes to check your dog’s paws, ears, coat, and between their toes. Catching a grass seed early before it travels under the skin can save your pet a lot of discomfort.

If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait! Contact your vet as soon as possible. Early treatment is always best. 💚

Meet Axel 🐾
Axel recently gave his family quite a scare after eating a large number of items that definitely weren’t meant to be on the menu! After becoming unwell, he was bought to Spring Corner where x-rays confirmed that he needed surgery to remove the foreign objects from his stomach, including a bin bag, grass, some jeans, 4 socks , some mystery material and some earrings! Axel’s surgery went well and he is recovering comfortably at home with his family ❤️

Tiny patient, big personality! Last week we had the pleasure of looking after Peanut, an adorable sugar glider, who came in for the day to be castrated. He recovered well and we are happy to report he’s back to climbing, gliding and causing mischief at home!

We know it’s never easy handing your best friend over for surgery💚

Rest assured, behind the scenes, staff are always on hand to provide comfort- just like Claudia here with Pickle!

Foreign body Friday!

Lovely little Roxy came to see us after feeling sick and we suspected that she may have eaten something she shouldn’t have! Our x-rays confirmed that she had ingested something suspicious and it had managed to become stuck in her small intestine. An exploratory surgery was the next step, where we found a plastic wheel from a toy car lodged in her intestine. 🛞 The surgery was a success and after removing the offending article Roxy felt much better!😻

If you suspect your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t have please seek veterinary advice as soon as possible.

Mimi was very brave for her microchip this week!
Did you know microchipping is mandatory for all cats over 20 weeks old? Many cats like to wander and having up to date microchip details helps make sure they are returned to you if they ever get lost 🐈🐾
