A moment for reflection...

What if confidence isn’t something you have to find before you begin?

Confidence and self-esteem have come up a lot in the therapy room recently.

We can easily imagine confident people as those who don’t doubt themselves, who know exactly what they’re doing, or who aren’t particularly bothered by what other people think.

But confidence doesn’t necessarily mean the absence of self-doubt.

Sometimes confidence looks like doing something while the doubt is still there.

Speaking up even though your voice feels shaky.
Setting a boundary even though you worry someone might be disappointed.
Trying something new without knowing whether you’ll be good at it.
Allowing yourself to take up space without immediately wondering whether you’re “too much”.
Making a decision without needing everyone else to reassure you that it’s the right one.

And self-esteem isn’t built simply by thinking more positively about ourselves.

It can grow through the experiences we give ourselves - noticing our needs, keeping promises to ourselves, recognising our strengths, treating ourselves with the same compassion we readily offer others, and learning that we can cope when things don’t go perfectly.

Perhaps confidence isn’t:

“I know I can do this.”

Perhaps sometimes it’s simply:

“I don’t know how this will go, but I trust myself enough to try.”

Sometimes we become so busy coping that we forget to ask ourselves whether we're actually living in a way that feels meaningful.

Counselling isn't only for moments of crisis. It can also be a space to pause, reflect, understand yourself more deeply and create meaningful change.

If any of these signs resonated with you, I'd love to know which one spoke to you most.

With curiosity and compassion, Jocelyn

A little re-introduction...

Hello, I'm Jocelyn.

Whether you've been here for a while or you've only recently found my page, I thought it was time to say hello properly.

I believe that being truly heard can be life-changing.

For many people, it's a surprisingly rare experience to feel listened to without judgement, without someone trying to fix them, or without feeling they need to be anything other than themselves. That's what led me to become a counsellor, and it's something I continue to feel deeply privileged to offer every person who walks through my door.

I'm an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist based in Basingstoke, working with adults both in person and online across the UK and internationally.

People often come to see me feeling overwhelmed, stuck or exhausted from carrying things on their own. Sometimes they know exactly why they're struggling. Other times they simply know that life doesn't feel quite right anymore.

I work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, neurodivergence, addiction, grief and loss, life transitions, and those navigating psychiatric medication withdrawal.

One of the things I love most about this work is that no two people are the same. I don't believe therapy should be a one-size-fits-all process. Every person brings their own story, experiences, strengths and challenges, and I believe therapy should honour that.

My approach is warm, collaborative and evidence-informed. I'm naturally curious and enjoy helping people make sense of themselves—not by judging or trying to "fix" them, but by creating a space where they can safely explore, understand and grow.

Outside of the therapy room you'll usually find me walking in nature, making music with friends, spending time with my family, or enjoying a good coffee.

Thank you for being here. Whether you're looking for support yourself, you're simply interested in mental health, or you've been quietly following along, I'm really glad you've found your way here.

If you're wondering whether counselling might be right for you, you're always welcome to get in touch for a free 15-minute chat.

Many people assume healthy relationships are the ones with the least conflict.

In reality, all relationships experience moments of distance, misunderstanding, and disconnection.

The question isn't whether rupture will happen - it will.

The question is: what happens next?

Can we stay in the conversation? Can we repair? Can we find our way back to each other?

Often, that's where trust is built.

What does repair look like for you?

A validating read for anyone who’s spent too long questioning themselves in relationships.

Anger is one of the emotions I think many of us struggle to understand, both in ourselves and in others.

Some people fear it. Some explode with it. Some suppress it completely. Some learned very early that they weren’t “allowed” to feel it at all.

But anger itself is not wrong.

Often underneath anger there is something deeply human: hurt, fear, grief, shame, helplessness, crossed boundaries, or unmet emotional needs.

And sometimes anger is less: “I am an angry person” and more: “My nervous system has moved into protection.”

That distinction can reduce so much shame.

Of course, not every reaction that comes from anger is helpful or healthy, but the emotion itself deserves curiosity rather than immediate judgement.

The goal isn’t to never feel anger. The goal is to understand it, express it safely, and respond rather than react.

If you’ve learned to keep others comfortable…
you might have learned to override yourself in the process.

To say yes when you mean no
To stay quiet when something doesn’t feel right
To prioritise connection over authenticity

And that makes sense.
It likely served a purpose at some point.

But you’re allowed to take up space too.
🌿 This week, notice where you might choose yourself -
even in a small, compassionate way.

This quote can feel powerful.... but also a little confronting.

Because what if you don’t feel like you have a “why” right now? You’re not alone in that.

For many people, a sense of meaning isn’t something clear or fixed, it can feel distant, unclear, or even absent at times.

And that doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you.

Sometimes, your “why” isn’t something you find all at once - it’s something that slowly unfolds.

In small moments.
In what matters, even a little.
In what you care about, even when things feel too much.

It might be:
• getting through the day
• showing up for someone you love
• taking one small step forward
• being curious about yourself

Your “why” doesn’t have to be big or certain to be real.

And if you can’t feel it right now, maybe the starting point isn’t finding your purpose… but gently asking:

What feels even slightly meaningful to me today?

Confidence and self-esteem are often misunderstood.

Most people think confidence means feeling certain, or never doubting yourself but that’s not real life.

In therapy, I often see that confidence grows from something much deeper:

• A sense of meaning and purpose
• Learning to be kinder to yourself
• Feeling connected, rather than constantly comparing

It’s not about becoming more “perfect”,
it’s about feeling more secure in who you are.

And that takes time, practice, and compassion.

If this resonates, which slide stood out most to you?
