🌍 𝗙𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥 – 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗱!

On 𝟭𝟳 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, the project came to an end with the closing conference “𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲, 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁”, 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗙𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗼 𝗞𝗿𝗲𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗮, 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮.

Funded by the European Union through the 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀, 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 (𝗖𝗘𝗥𝗩) 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 and coordinated by alda* - European Association for Local Democracy, FOSTER brought together partners and communities across seven European countries to explore how participatory approaches can contribute to anticipating and responding to the long-term social and economic impacts of climate change.

Over two years, the project connected 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 through strategic foresight, participatory processes, local co-design and transnational exchange.

The closing conference provided an opportunity to reflect on these experiences and bring them into a wider European discussion. The 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀’ 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹 “𝗦𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲” showcased experiences from seven countries, while the 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹 “𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝘆𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘆𝗯𝗱𝗶𝘀” explored the opportunities and challenges of meaningful participation in the face of complex climate challenges.

Alongside the conference, FOSTER partners gathered for a dedicated consortium workshop to reflect on achievements, challenges, lessons learned and the potential for replication and adaptation of the methodologies developed.

For ALDA, coordinating FOSTER has meant 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻-𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 and creating spaces for citizens, institutions, researchers and civil society to exchange and reflect together. As FOSTER comes to an end, its methodologies and experiences provide a foundation for continued knowledge transfer, adaptation and replication beyond the project.

🤝📍 study visit in Sweden | Joining forces for a fair access for people in Europe

From 1 to 4 September, ALDA was in Gothenburg (Sweden) to present our AMIL project (Alliance Multi-Stakeholder for Migrant Integration and Labour), expand its community of interest (CoI) and exchange good practices with local actors who share our mission.

Hosted by ALDA’s member Support Group Network - SGN, Swedish NGO created by refugees for refugees, this study visit represented a unique opportunity for:
🔸 Strengthening membership network to work together towards shared goals;
🔸 Exchanging perspectives and good practices to enhance an already impactful work;
🔸 Setting the ground to ensure that high-impact projects promoting the effective inclusion of third-country nationals (TCNs) in Europe continue to generate results even after the project has officially ended. This particularly in view of the conclusion of the AMIL project;
🔸 Meeting people and realities engaged in the promotion of AMIL’s values. This included a visit to the school of Restad Gård asylum accommodation to observe how the language barriers met by people with migratory background can be overcome through teachers’ dedication and the application of the “suggestopedia” innovative learning method.

🌎 We believe that projects like AMIL should represent not an endpoint, but a starting point towards a sustainable process for inclusion. 🌍✨ The ALDA Research Network is in action!

Antonella Valmorbida, ALDA Secretary General, is the first member of the ALDA team to officially start her I-CIVIC secondment at EHU (Universidad del Pais Vasco) in Bilbao, Spain! 🌊
Her mobility is divided into two phases, with a second period planned for November, and marks an important step in ALDA’s contribution to the project.

📚 During the first days, Antonella worked on the framework for ALDA’s research and on indicators for local democratic resilience, which will guide colleagues in the case-based research they will carry out throughout the project.

Through I-Civic , ALDA is bringing its experience from the local level into the research, connecting citizens’ participation, local democratic resilience and evidence from communities across Europe. 🏛️

The project is also at the heart of the research work of the ALDA Centre of Expertise on Participative Local Democracy, strengthening the bridge between research and ALDA’s work on the ground.

This kind of action is at the heart of our (Participatory Action for Community Transformation) project, designed to contribute to the recognition and inclusion of underrepresented in local communities in Europe.

Funded by the programme of the European Union, this project adopts a participative, horizontal approach - refusing the “top-down” one - to work on a together with migrant-led organisations, people with migratory background, refugees, Roma and other underrepresented minorities to value their role in the decision-making processes.

We believe that a lasting peace is possible only when everyone’s voice, without exclusions, can be listened to in the promotion of this value.

🌎What are the main local and structural barriers met by underrepresented in local communities in Europe, and what can be done to break them?

Under the Work Package 3 (WP3) of the (Participatory Action for Community Transformation) project, the consortium conducted national consultation roundtables that engaged municipal officers, civil society organisations (CSOs), minority-led groups, and residents to answer this question.

6 different activities in 6 different countries, one common goal: reunite all these actors to identify, analyse and map the barriers that underrepresented minorities meet when it comes to local community in Europe, and to find together, through a participative horizontal approach, concrete .

📍The local workshops took place in Brescia (Italy), Barcelona (Spain), Piraeus (Greece), Paris (France), Kumanovo (North Macedonia), Budapest (Hungary).
