Excellent conditions on 14 January 2014 allowed observations over most of the lava dome, except for the west flank which was largely obscured by the gas plume. For the first time since 2011, observations were made inside the crater in the summit of the dome, a result of good weather coinciding with the helicopter at MVO. These observations revealed several groups of fumaroles within the crater with temperatures of 140-340 °C. There were also two large ponds of mud/water present and rockfall deposits at the foot of the steep crater walls. Elsewhere on the lava dome, no significant changes were observed.
Due to the very low number of rockfalls in the last two months, there has been little accumulation of rockfall debris below the main rockfall source areas (inside the 2010 collapse scar, the cliff in the eastern flank and gullies on the southwest and west flanks). Fumarole temperatures measured by thermal infrared camera ranged from 250-515 °C and are within normal ranges for the observed fumaroles. The hottest temperatures are still found inside the 2010 collapse scar where two persistent fumaroles have temperatures of 515 and 500 °C.
The clear weather continued past sunset on 14 January permitting observation of the dome at night. Despite the full moon, several point sources of incandescence were observed and recorded in long-exposure photographs. No obvious changes in the position and number of incandescent sources were observed.
All these observations indicate that the dome, the fumaroles and associated thermal features remain stable. No changes have been observed recently that would indicate any resumption or cessation of activity at the Soufrière Hills Volcano.
