SPACE WEATHER BALLOON DATA - ARE YOU FLYING IN AIRPLANES?

Almost once a week, Spaceweather and the students of Earth to Sky Calculus fly space weather balloons to the stratosphere over California. These balloons are equipped with sensors that detect secondary cosmic rays, a form of radiation from space.

One of the factor in our exposure to cosmic radiation is the number and length of airline flights we take.
The radiation from two cross-country flights is about equal to the radiation dose from a single chest x-ray.
