Irmin Schmidt on his new album Requiem, field recording, and its connection to CAN’s discography:

“Even in CAN, there were always environmental sounds included, because the CAN studio had a big door opening onto the outside yard, and when we recorded, it was always left open. The sounds from outside didn’t disturb us as we went on recording — we liked that. You can hear a plane, the kids in the neighbour’s swimming pool, agricultural machines, and all sorts of other sounds. But we didn’t record nature the way I did for Requiem. That’s different.”

Beyond CAN, Holger Czukay also built a solo universe of his own.

From "Movies" to "On the Way to the Peak of Normal", "Der Osten ist Rot" or "Rome Remains Rome", his records turned radio waves, collage and humour into another kind of pop language.

And the sleeves mattered too: never just covers, but visual extensions of Holger’s strange, playful and singular imagination.
