At Navigate 2026, Mikko Ilus, Principal Naval Architect at Meyer Turku, will take part in the panel “Shipwright’s Bench: How Innovation, Productivity, and Decarbonisation Intersect in Modern Shipbuilding?”

Mikko Ilus brings nearly three decades of experience in shipbuilding, covering naval architecture, product development, sales support and project management. At Meyer Turku, he has also held leadership roles including Head of Product Development and Head of Naval Architecture.

During his career, Mikko has contributed to the design and development of several major Royal Caribbean cruise ship classes, including Freedom of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas and, most recently, Icon of the Seas.

His expertise spans ship design, stability and safety, regulatory compliance, classification approvals, noise and performance analysis, as well as the development of innovative and sustainable maritime solutions.

Beyond the shipyard, he also serves as an Advisor to SEA Europe and represents the European shipbuilding industry in the European Commission’s Passenger Ship Safety Expert Group. For more than two decades, he has also advised the Finnish Maritime Administration at the International Maritime Organization.

At Navigate 2026, Mikko Ilus will bring this combination of ship design, technical development and regulatory experience to a discussion on how innovation, productivity and decarbonisation can advance together in modern shipbuilding.

In one project, virtual testing of a cruise ship LNG fuel system helped identify and resolve more than ten design and control issues before commissioning. Semantum has also contributed to the MEYER Energy Management System, supporting onboard energy and water management.

At Navigate 2026, Semantum will showcase how simulation and digital twins can help reduce risk, evaluate alternatives and improve vessel performance throughout the ship lifecycle.

At Navigate 2026, Liina Vahala, Senior Manager, Head of Ferry Design at Foreship, will take part in the panel “Arctic Shipbuilding Excellence Presents: Leading the Future of Green and High-Quality Shipbuilding.”

Liina Vahala’s career in the maritime industry spans engineering, naval architecture, concept development and product development. At Meyer Turku, her roles included Conceptual Design Lead, Project Manager and Head of Product Development, and she led the development of the Net Zero Cruise Ship Concept in different roles.

This year, Vahala joined Foreship, where she now works particularly with ferry projects and business development, supporting ferry and cruise operators from early concept development through to project ex*****on. Her work brings together operational requirements, competitiveness, decarbonisation, electrification and the practical realities of newbuilding projects.

At Navigate 2026, she will bring both shipyard and consulting perspectives to a discussion on how northern shipbuilding can combine sustainability, advanced vessel design and demanding operational requirements while continuing to deliver high-quality vessels for global markets.

Ari Viitanen’s career has taken him from marine production to cargo systems, sales, customer solutions and entrepreneurship. Ari Viitanen began his maritime career at Aker Yards, working as a Production Engineer and later as a Production Manager, before moving into commercial and customer-focused roles at MacGregor and Cargotec.

In 2012, Ari Viitanen founded Carinafour to improve processes in complex project industries. Today, the company combines technology, logistics and production expertise to help ensure that materials are available at the right place and time. One example is CALS, Carinafour’s digital platform for managing material flows from design and supply chain through production and lifecycle management.
