Toyota still won’t confirm that a successor to the Supra is in development, but we know better.
The Japanese automaker has been teasing a new Supra ever since the brilliant FT-1 Concept debuted, and now rumor has it that Toyota is developing an all-new, twin-turbo V6 engine for its sports car. The powerplant will reportedly have more than 400 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque and will also be used to power the new Lexus GS and LS models. Car Keys cites Japanese publication Mag-X, which received the information from Toyota insiders. Internally, the engine code is 943F.
On paper, it all makes sense, especially since the Toyota Supra’s successor is expected to be the result of a collaboration with BMW and Toyota. BMW is expected to use the platform for the new Z5, which will likely have turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines under the hood. It’s unlikely that Toyota will want to use a BMW engine, which means it has to develop a new powerplant that will work with the co-developed platform.
Various automakers, especially luxury ones, are turning to smaller turbocharged engines to increase performance and fuel efficiency. The last Toyota Supra used a twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, but even the recent GT-R has moved to a V6 powerplant, so don’t be surprised if Toyota pursues a new engine to make its Supra a contender. It has also been rumored that the next Supra will be a hybrid, but we have a suspicion this V6 might be more fun.

For the second year in a row, Toyota was issued more patents than any other automaker.
The Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO) recently published data on patents issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 2015, and Toyota is the only automaker listed among the top 20 on the IPO list. The Japanese automaker received 1,636 patents and over the past eight years, it has been awarded more patents than any other automotive company. Other companies in the top 20 include Apple, Google, IBM and Microsoft.
One of the more interesting patents filed by Toyota last year is one that hints at a flying car, featuring a stackable wing. While it may not be realistic for the time being, it shows that Toyota is forward-thinking whether it’s working on artificial skin for pedestrian safety mannequins or helping self-driving cars detect and safely react to emergency situations.
“As companies in the automotive industry transform themselves into broader mobility providers, no auto company better demonstrates innovation and technology for the future than Toyota,” said Jeff Makarewicz, senior vice president, Toyota Technical Center (TTC), Toyota’s North American research and development headquarters. “We’re focused on delivering great experiences for our customers, a cornerstone of Toyota’s product commitment, and this recognition is proof we’re living up to that promise.”

The redesigned Toyota Tacoma is now more off-road ready than ever.
Toyota has revealed the 2017 Tacoma TRD Pro at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show, designed to tackle the desert going flat out. Toyota’s TRD Pro models are all Baja-inspired off-road racers that get both improved appearance and some decent performance upgrades.
2016 Chicago Auto Show Coverage
For the 2017 model year, Toyota is bringing the TRD Propackage back to the Tacoma after the truck was fully redesigned for 2016. That means the TRD Pro uses the Tacoma’s new 3.5-liter V6 with 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, which can be paired to a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission.
The bits that actually make it desert ready include FOX 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks all around, TRD-tuned front springs which lift the truck by one inch, progressive-rate off-road leaf springs and four-wheel drive with Toyota’s automatic limited-slip differential. Both Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select, Toyota’s off-road aides are standard on the truck.
The TRD Pro is based on the Tacoma TRD Off-Road 4×4 double cab short bed and also includes a tow package that comes with a hitch, an engine oil cooler, power steeringcooler, 130-amp alternator and trailer-sway control.
To make sure it looks good, the truck is fit with 16-inch black alloy wheels, wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain tires. Black TRD Pro badging is found all over the truck, while fog lights, a skid plate and projector beam headlamps frame the new grille which’s features the classic “TOYOTA” badge.
Three colors can be had with the truck: cement, Barcelona red metallic, and super white.
Inside, the truck gets leather-trimmed heated front seats with TRD Pro logos in the headrests, a 4-way adjustable driver’s seat, a TRD shift k**b, TRD floor mats, rear parking assist and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
Like with all new Tacoma models, the TRD Pro is fit with a standard GoPro mount so you can record your adventures.
Expect the 2017 Tacoma TRD Pro to hit dealer in fall of 2016.
