Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most pressing health challenges of our time, yet many regions in Bulgaria still face significant barriers to prevention, early diagnosis, and coordinated care.

Fragmented data sources, limited interoperability between healthcare systems, unequal access to specialized services, and gaps in patient engagement make it difficult to detect and manage the disease effectively.

Through the Bulgarian pilot of the project, we are working to change this by creating a shared, high-quality health data platform dedicated to Alzheimer’s. The goal is to connect healthcare professionals, patients, families, and researchers through a secure and interoperable data ecosystem.

At VELES, we believe that trusted health data spaces can help reduce regional inequalities and empower patients to make more informed decisions about their health. 🇪🇺

At , we are working on a pilot study on dementia in Cyprus. 🇨🇾

For many people living with dementia, communicating pain becomes increasingly difficult. This often means that pain is overlooked or undertreated, affecting their quality of life and overall care. ☹️

By leveraging the Regional Smart Health Data Space ( ), the pilot enables the secure collection, standardization, and sharing of real-world data on pain assessment in people with dementia.

This creates a trusted, interoperable health data ecosystem that supports better clinical decisions, cross-border collaboration, and the development of AI-powered decision support tools.

The result? More personalized, data-driven care for people living with dementia, while advancing a more connected and resilient digital health ecosystem across Europe.

🎗️ Cancer remains one of Europe's greatest health challenges.

In 2023, cancer was the second leading cause of death in the EU, accounting for nearly 1 in 4 deaths. Tackling this complex disease requires more than medical expertise - it requires better .

Today, cancer data is often scattered across different healthcare systems, making it difficult to unlock its full potential for research, clinical decision-making, and AI-driven innovation.

The Greek 🇬🇷 pilot of the VELES project is addressing this challenge by creating a FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data ecosystem for multimodal cancer data. By improving how data is collected, standardized, and shared, the pilot lays the foundation for secure collaboration between healthcare providers, researchers, and innovators.

The result? High-quality, interoperable datasets that can power AI models, support clinical decision-making, and ultimately contribute to more personalized and effective cancer care.

In Romania, patients diagnosed with brain tumors 🧠 often require treatment at multiple hospitals. Surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and follow-up care may all take place at different healthcare facilities. Yet, patient information doesn't always move as seamlessly as the patient does. 😓

The VELES pilot on cerebral tumors is working to change that.

By creating an integrated regional repository for brain tumor data, the pilot aims to connect clinical, imaging, and pathology information in one secure, interoperable environment. This will help healthcare professionals access the information they need, support better clinical decisions, and improve continuity of care as patients move between hospitals. 🚀

Beyond improving patient care, the pilot will also provide researchers with high-quality data to better understand brain tumors, identify new prognostic factors, and explore how AI and machine learning can support earlier diagnosis and more personalized treatment.

Through collaboration and trusted health data sharing, is helping build the foundations for smarter, more connected healthcare across Europe. 🇷🇴

Between June 11 and 12, we participated in the SpinOff Europa Conference'26 in 📍 Sofia, Bulgaria. 🇧🇬

Throughout the conference, Radoslav Rizov, project manager at GATE Institute, together with Dr. Iva Krasteva, senior researcher at GATE, explored the role of Health Data Spaces in unlocking the potential of health data, highlighting the project and its contribution to secure, interoperable, and policy-aligned health data exchange in Europe.

With over 500 participants, Spinoff Europa is the leading initiative for technology transfer, science-based innovation, and university spinoffs. This year’s theme was: “Building Europe’s Innovation Powerhouse." Congrats to the organizers!

The European Health Data Space ( ) is set to transform healthcare across Europe by making health data more accessible, secure, and interoperable.

One of its biggest advantages? Seamless health data exchange between healthcare providers across the EU. ✈️

For patients traveling, working, or studying abroad, this means healthcare professionals can access relevant medical information - when needed and under strict privacy rules - helping ensure safer, faster, and more informed care. 🛡️

This was a fantastic opportunity to showcase VELES and Alasia Health, their -ready and interoperable Electronic Health Record (EHR) platform.

At VELES, we are paving the way for the European Health Data Space ( ) by developing the first Regional Smart Health Data Space ( ) in South-East Europe.
