Dr. Dessislava Dimitrova will present in the plenary session "Biodiversity conservation: preventing flora and fauna from extinction", together with Prof. Tatyana Bileva.
She will present a study - co-authored with Teodora Ivanova and Radostina Doneva - on Local (agro)biodiversity and food as social and cultural capital. The study discusses possible opportunities and obstacles for small-scale farmers and food producers whose production depends on genetic resources under threat.
Prof. Dimitrova is Senior Scientist at the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and a botanist with over 30 years of experience in systematics, taxonomy, and plant conservation.

🚨 Masterclasses update 🚨
👉 The programme now includes one more masterclass for a total of 7 sessions, plus a set of 11 training sessions! 💪
Three of the masterclasses will focus on key projects from LifeWatch ERIC Distributed Centres:
✅ Christos Arvanitidis will introduce the recently-launched RECUP-DAS project, that has the mission of cleaning two river basins from acid mine drainage through a Dispersed Alkaline Substrate ( ) plant.
✅ Alberto Basset will present ITINERIS, dedicated to building the Italian Hub of Research Infrastructures in the environmental scientific domain.
✅ Peter van Tienderen will offer an overview of LTER-LIFE, the scientific infrastructure aimed at supporting shared and integrated ecological research towards the building of digital twins of ecosystems.

Prof. Tatyana Bileva, one of our esteemed plenary speakers at , will illustrate through practical examples the need to protect biodiversity, and its fundamental role in supporting human well-being. In her session, she will take us through success stories of restoration actions to bring back species that had already disappeared from the area.
Prof. Bileva is Associate Professor of Ecology at Agricultural University-Plovdiv, (the hosting institution of BEeS for this year), and has been Head of the Department of Agroecology since 2024. She holds a PhD in Zoology and she is specialised in Ecology and Environmental protection, with over 70 scientific papers and 2 books published. 📚

What happens when marine science meets a public celebration? 🌊
On 7 June 2026, Marine SABRES joined Iceland’s Fishermen’s Day through the Marine SABRES in Fairs initiative, within an event organised by Hafrannsóknastofnun.
Visitors of all ages explored fisheries, marine ecosystems, and research through hands-on experiences and interactive tools.

The CEO will work with the General Assembly, Member States and partners to strengthen LifeWatch ERIC’s scientific excellence, technological capacity, organisational cohesion and contribution to open science, biodiversity knowledge and sustainability policy.

🚨 Learning opportunities at BEeS 2026! (Plovdiv, 7-10 July)🚨
This year, we are happy to offer a rich programme of 11 training sessions and 6 masterclasses during the BEeS Conference. 💪
🌾 💻 Masterclass #1 is held by Sandro Hurtado Requena (Universidad de Málaga): it includes an introduction to EU Data Spaces and a demonstration of the Data Space for the Andalusian Agricultural sector ( ), as well as some of the applications available.
🐯 🐼 🦄 Masterclass #2, with Moreno di Marco (Sapienza Università di Roma), and Francesco De Leo (Cnr_Iret), will guide you through the use of the sRedList platform, that facilitates and streamlines extinction risk assessment in the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems.
In this session, you will create a range map for an example species starting from the use of species occurrence records, and you will estimate several Red List parameters to obtain a possible extinction risk assessment.

🌊 Marine SABRES in Fairs heads to Iceland!
After a great experience in Gran Canaria, in Fairs is on the move again, this time to Hafnarfjörður, on 7 June 2026, as part of the traditional Fishermen’s Day celebrations.
⚓ The Hafrannsóknastofnun - Marine & Freshwater Research Institute will open its doors with a rich schedule of activities.
🚢 As part of the programme, Marine SABRES in Fairs will engage visitors with hands-on materials and interactive activities, raising awareness of marine biodiversity and the role of science in supporting more sustainable choices.
