Buildings that cool themselves and reuse their own water.

Nobody used to stop on this street.

It was a street that people rushed through.

Then we transformed one building on the street into a green building.

And something changed that we did not think about.

People stopped.
They looked up.

With time, people changed their route to work.
Because they wanted to walk past the plants.

In just a few months, a street people used to ignore
became a street people choose.

The street feels cooler when you stand next to the wall.
It feels calmer.
It feels like someone cares about this place.

A green building changes how a street feels,
and how people move through it.

For more than 15 years we have been turning buildings like this one into living systems.

If you don't design with water — you don't understand architecture

Every day we flush clean drinking water down the toilet.

At the same time, 2.2 billion people don't have safe water to drink.

That makes no sense!

At Biotonomy, we follow a better way — nature’s way.
We design buildings that become part of the natural water cycle.

Here is how it works, step by step:

1 - Rain falls on the roof.
2 - It goes into a tank and gets filtered.
3 - You shower and wash with it.
4 - That shower water is reused to flush the toilet.
5 - The toilet water is filtered with plants.
6 - The water is used for irrigation.
7 - Plants drink what is left and breathe it out through their leaves.

It turns into clouds. And the cycle starts again.

Nothing is thrown away. Every drop gets used again, the way nature does it.

This cuts water use by up to 75%. It also keeps dirty water out of rivers and the sea.

We have enough water. We just use it once and throw it away.

If you don't understand air, you don't understand buildings.

Most buildings get their air from one machine.
It takes the same air and pushes it round the room, again and again.

That is like reusing the same shower water every day without cleaning it.

Plants make new air constantly, and that's why we must have them indoors.
They have done it for millions of years, and you feel it the moment you stand next to a green wall.

For more than 15 years, we've been turning conventional buildings into buildings that work with natural systems, inside and out.

Part 2 next week: what the same wall does to the noise.

We have learned to accept ugly buildings as normal.

And our expectations have fallen with them.

Buildings have become products rather than expressions of who we are.

Civilizations once invested enormous resources into beautiful temples, gardens and public squares.

Today, we build entire parts of cities that nobody would ever visit for their beauty.

Because too much of what we build today is driven by cost, efficiency, cars and maximizing square meters — not human well-being.

At Biotonomy, we believe every building should give people a reason to stop and admire it.

Four years ago, almost nobody stopped in front of this hotel.

Today, after covering its facade with nature, it has become one of the most photographed hotels in Málaga, Spain.

And it doesn’t just look beautiful — the system treats and reuses the hotel’s shower water to irrigate the plants.

People stop. Look up. Take photos. Enjoy it.

That matters.

Because we shape our cities — and then our cities shape us.

We don't have a water problem - We have a design problem.

Every day, millions of showers send clean water straight down the drain.

That water is almost clean. A bit of soap and that's it.

It makes no sense to throw it away!

At Biotonomy, we follow a better way - nature's way.

We design buildings where water is used again and again, like in a forest.

Here is how it works, step by step:

1 - You take a shower.
2 - That water goes into a natural treatment bed. A bed of gravel and plants.
3 - The plants and the tiny life in the gravel clean the water. No chemicals.
4 - The clean water is pumped to the green walls and the green roof.
5 - The plants drink it and breathe it out through their leaves.
6 - That breathing cools the air around the building. Like sweat cools your skin.
7 - The water turns into clouds.

Nothing is thrown away. The same shower water cleans itself, feeds the plants, and cools the building.

A green wall and roof can keep the surface temperature up to 30 degrees cooler on a hot day.
The water to do it was already in your building.

We have enough water. We just use it once and throw it away.

Everybody thinks a green building is expensive to look after.

But here is the part nobody tells you about conventional buildings.

For every €1 spent building it, you spend around €2 keeping it running over its life.

That means you pay for a building three times.
Once when you build it.
Then two more times, over the next 50 years, just to keep it working.

Every building you have ever been in is being maintained right now.
Someone is cleaning the windows.
Someone is changing the filters in the air conditioning.
Someone is fixing the cracks and painting the facade.

We grew up inside these buildings and learned to accept the running costs without thinking about it.

Here is what a green wall really needs. We've been doing it for 15 years.

A gardener comes a few times a year.
Cuts back the plants, checks the drippers, swaps a few plants.

Watering happens by itself. A pump is the only thing that eventually breaks.
And our sensors tell us before that happens.
That's it.

A green wall costs about the same as keeping a glass wall clean.
But one wall heats your building up all summer. The other one keeps it cool.

A "zero maintenance" building simply does not exist.

Can you believe plants can turn toilet wastewater into clean, usable water?

It might sound crazy, but it's 100% possible — no chemicals, no machines, just nature!

For the past 200 years, we've moved toilet water from cities to rivers and oceans.

In the 1900s, we started treating some of the wastewater with chemicals and energy.

Today, 80% of the world's wastewater still goes untreated. This is a serious situation that most people are not aware of.

But the solution is so easy. Here's how it works:

1️⃣ Plants are planted in a special system filled with gravel. They start growing and preparing to clean the water.

2️⃣ The magic happens underground. As the water flows through the system, plant roots and helpful bacteria remove waste and harmful substances.

3️⃣ Clean water flows out! The result? Crystal-clear water that's safe for irrigation, flushing the toilet, or returning to nature.

Imagine how much water we could save in our cities if we made it mandatory for all buildings to treat their wastewater.

And on top of that, this solution helps create a habitat for wildlife and biodiversity.

If you've ever felt like quitting, read this.

15 years ago a Swedish city denied and laughed at us for asking to reuse wastewater in a building.

10 years ago a German city tore down our school project for treating wastewater on site.

5 years ago a Spanish city kicked us out for recycling shower water on a hotel facade.

We went country to country in Europe, begging for licenses.

So we left. Lebanon, Japan, Chile, Malawi, Colombia and more opened their doors. They already knew what water stress feels like.

Europe thought it never would come.

Today water stress hits one third of the EU's land. And Sweden, Germany and Spain have problems nobody saw coming.

Now we are back. Building the first green wall fed by recycled shower water in Madrid.
Now countries that once denied us ask us to fix their buildings.

So if you see a big, painful problem and nobody gets it:
Don't give up. Keep building with what you have, even if it's small.

Once the problem you saw first starts spreading, they will all come to you.

We used to beg to do projects. Now they beg us to fix their buildings.

Most people think a green building is full of mosquitoes.

But the mosquitoes are only in your head.

Here is why:

Mosquitoes don't lay eggs in plants.
They do not lay eggs in soil.
They lay eggs in water that stands still for about a week.

A green wall is watered drop by drop.
The roots drink it.
Whatever is left drains away.
So the water never sits.

If you want to find the mosquitoes, look at the bucket behind the kitchen.
Or the blocked gutter on your roof.
That is where they live. Not in the garden.

Then people ask about the bugs and the spiders.

Yes, a plant has a little life in it.
That is how you know it is alive.

An insect comes for the leaf.
A spider comes for the insect.
A bird comes for the spider.

Nobody takes over, because everybody is somebody's food.
That's how cycles in nature work.

We just built cities so clean of life that a spider now feels like a mistake.

It is not a mistake.
It is the system working.

You couldn't touch this wall. That's how hot it got.

People would walk past fast just to avoid the heat.

The concrete panels on the wall pushed the sun straight back onto the street.

So we added a green wall in front of it.

Now the plants take the heat instead.

It only took us 2 weeks.

The wall is now 20 degrees cooler.

And now people stop to look at it.

Because it feels cool and comfortable.
