In our industry, the term ‘retransfer technology’ pops into conversation every day but do we know all the ins and outs? We go back to basics to remember the essentials…

#1 It’s called ‘retransfer’ because it refers to the process of printing the image required for a secure card to a film (‘retransfer film’) before it’s applied to the card.

#2 It’s done by first printing the image in reverse (‘mirror image’), which goes directly onto a clear layer of film and then, the piece of film with the image is fused onto the card’s surface with heat and pressure.

#3 ‘Edge-to-edge’ printing refers to the total absence of white space around the edge once the card is printed. Why? Because the printed image (‘bleed’) is bigger than the card itself. (N.B. This is in stark contrast to direct-to-card printing which always DOES have white space around the edges.)

#4 Vibrant colors are associated with retransfer printing thanks to its color registration. It’s so good it even rivals pre-print quality.

#5 Any surface will do! Incredibly, retransfer printing can be done on almost any material, even when it’s uneven – and that’s without damaging the print head!
