Pilates põhineb kuuel peamisel printsiibil: keskendumine, kontroll, täpsus, hingamine, voolavus ja keskme (kere süvalihaste) aktiveerimine. Need aitavad parandada kehahoiakut, tugevdada lihaseid, suurendada painduvust ning ennetada vigastusi. Printsiibid tagavad, et harjutusi tehakse teadlikult ja tõhusalt, mitte lihtsalt mehaaniliselt.

Pilates is based on six key principles: concentration, control, precision, breathing, flow, and core activation. These principles help improve posture, strengthen muscles, increase flexibility, and prevent injuries. They ensure exercises are performed mindfully and effectively rather than mechanically.
Pilates7Studio classes have a seventh principle included - balance.
