Every dollar makes a difference.

For many children in Quito’s markets, the day begins before sunrise.

At 3:00 a.m., families begin working in the markets, and many children grow up surrounded by an environment where education can be difficult to access. Barriers like the cost of school supplies, transportation, and limited resources can prevent children from having the same opportunities to learn and grow.

At UBECI, we believe every child deserves the chance to learn, play, and simply be a child.

This September, we are launching our Backpack of Opportunities: School Kits Campaign to provide children with the supplies they need to start the school year ready to learn.

Each school kit costs just $12 and includes notebooks, pencils, pens, colored pencils, crayons, erasers, and glue. Our goal is to raise $2,000 to provide school kits for all children currently reached by UBECI.

Today, Nicole dreams of becoming an English teacher.

But more than 360,000 children in Ecuador are still balancing work alongside their education, and many children in Quito’s markets are still learning on market pavements while trying to do both.

Five years later, he’s back.

In 2021, a group of volunteers from Idaho spent weeks teaching alongside Mónica and Byron in Quito’s markets.

On their last day, Jason told us:

“That bus ride home was tough. There were mostly tears, just realising how much difference you’d made. It had changed you. And then it was over.”

Five years later, he’s back.

This time, he’s returned with the younger siblings of those original volunteers.

“They’ve been talking about it for years. They wanted to be part of this story.”

But this visit is different.

Their siblings taught children on the pavement.

This generation is helping build them a classroom.

At UBECI, we believe that when you empower a child, a parent, or a community, lasting change follows.
