There is was sitting with John Michael Montgomery on his tour bus waiting for show time. Just me and him drinking Jack and talking music. There was a currently VERY famous singing on the stage...hollerin’ belly notes. And HE said,”That’s a real pretty high note. Don’t make me feel anything though.” I half laughed, half choked on my Old Fashion as I told him that I’ve said the same thing my whole career. Sure, the high notes can be MONEY. ....if there’s an emotional motive behind them. Otherwise, it’s just hollerin’. So many young singers look for places in songs to put high notes, whether they are needed or not. Hey… Stop that. Sing for the lyric. And very often, the lyric is begging for you to belt out your best high notes. And if you go for it, they had better be good. Talk to me. What do y’all think? •

Recently got to perform with the jazz faculty at Belmont University. Did four songs. Here’s the ending of ‘s “You Must Believe in Spring.” Lyrics by the Bergmans. Been fighting a cold for over two weeks. So I had to pull out every trick I knew to get a decent performance. It can be done. Might not be your best, but you can still give the audience a great experience even when you don’t feel great. Thanks the jazz guys for including me and thanks to whoever captured this little video.•

Major challenges with traveling and coaching voices abroad: diet, exercise, rest. Finding the foods you need to sustain your healthy diet can be pretty tough in different countries when you have limited time and limited transportation. And the schedule (8AM to 9:30PM) makes exercise and rest a luxury. Same is true for any vocalist. Your job is severely more affected by travel than your band mates that don’t have to sing. Sure, they might get tired and may even make some mistakes onstage because of it. But YOU, a vocalist...totally different. Your instrument is your flesh. So you gotta plan ahead: pack extra protein, supplements, over-the-counter meds that you won’t find overseas. Fatigue, severe diet change, and different climates can make you prone to getting sick. Any questions? Any advice from seasoned performers that also travel and sing? Leave a comment plz. •

Dark Hedges really are a wonder. Put it on the list.
For my friend who just surprised me by stopping by the bar here in Galway.

Few days of exploring before the work. Could use a filter, but there it is. •
