“The car feels loose.”

Or some variation of it, is one of the most common things you’ll hear from a driver trackside. It is also one of the least useful observations to work with.

It isn’t a quantity. You can’t trend it across a stint, you can’t compare it between two cars, and two engineers won’t agree on what it means.

The physics underneath is well understood. What is usually missing is a single number connecting it to what the driver is describing.

Part 2 of my Performance Through Tyre Management series looks at three ‘centroids’ as an interacting system: mass, aerodynamic load, and lateral force response.

From there it turns to the Stability Index as an objective link between balance, vehicle response, slip-angle demand and tyre energy.

An interesting concept, and elegant in its simplicity.

A moment on my journey which I look back on with some real fondness.

Going to Munich to record a podcast at the BMW Classic museum with none other than Ulrich J.M. Schulz , responsible for leading the design of BMW Motorsport engines from the 90s until retirement in 2023.

That covers F1 GTR, BMW F1, V12 LMR to the recent M Hybrid V8 LMDh.

I’ll always have a huge amount of respect for true experts in their field. 🙏🏾

Some time last year…

A snapshot of work over the last few months… blessings upon blessings..

Have taken a bit of a different direction with things in the last months which is why Wavey Dynamics socials have been a little quiet, but I’m exactly where I need to be 💫.

Still here, still alive, still kicking. Life is good.

We’ve just concluded a research project we had running with Imperial College over the last year. 🎉

Loic, a Masters Mechanical Engineering student has been doing some great research on a really interesting composites application we’re exploring.

Earlier this week we went to see him present the project to his classmates and the faculty.. Nice work Loic..!

The research has highlighted many avenues to pursue going forward, so the next steps of this project are going to be very interesting! Stay tuned..!

Wavey Dynamics teamed up with Code F1 to develop some insights from the 2023 WEC Season.

Looking at individual sector timing for each race, we classified and scored each sector of each championship round in terms of top speed and track curvature, analysed the top three finishers and displayed the patterns in a heat map.

What we found?

Perhaps not surprisingly, sector performance was a very strong predictor of championship finishing position and the championship finishing position was exactly as you’d expect to see from this heat map.

Being able to draw the right patterns out of data can be a deciding factor in the preparation and ex*****on of a race weekend or even the development of a new vehicle.

With Machine Learning and AI models making this more powerful than ever, it’s about to be an exciting time in motorsport!

With the Le Mans 24h approaching at the end of this week and practice sessions running from tomorrow, now seemed like a good time to write this article on racecar performance development.

This year, with several LMH and LMDh platforms making their debut at Le Mans, we take a closer look at the 5 key areas which development teams concentrated their efforts during the design and testing phases to achieve optimal performance and competitive edge.
