🗞️ New SENSES Press Release: Co-Creation Workshops Across Europe

The SENSES project has entered a new stage as co-creation workshops are taking place across partner institutions in Cyprus, Greece, the Netherlands, and Türkiye.

Bringing together teacher educators, pre-service teachers, and EES experts, these workshops create collaborative spaces where participants exchange ideas, experiment with teaching approaches, and co-develop practical resources for Education for Environmental Sustainability (EES). 🌱

Working within Professional Learning Communities, participants explore how sustainability competences can be integrated into science teaching through real-world socio-scientific questions, classroom dialogue, and collaborative design activities. The workshops focus on translating complex environmental challenges into meaningful learning experiences for future teachers and their students.

The ideas and materials emerging from these sessions will be refined and shared across the partnership, forming part of the foundations for the SENSES online course for Initial Teacher Education. 🌍

🌿On the 23rd & 24th of October, the SENSES consortium will gather at Boğaziçi Univeristy for the SENSES Train-the-Trainer Seminar!

This two-day event will bring together teacher educators and researchers from across Europe to explore innovative ways of embedding Education for Environmental Sustainability (EES) in teacher education.

The seminar will introduce the five interconnected facets of EES developed through SENSES, each addressing a key dimension of sustainability education:
🔹 Socio-Scientific Issues
🔹 Inquiry-Based Learning
🔹 Ocean Literacy
🔹 Systems Thinking
🔹 Problem-Solving

Participants will also discuss the results of the project’s survey on EES in teacher education and insights from the focus group study conducted earlier this year.

Hosted by our colleagues at Boğaziçi University, the seminar marks a major milestone for SENSES; moving from development to hands-on implementation, and strengthening collaboration among partners from the Netherlands, Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, and Germany.
Stay tuned for updates from Istanbul as we exchange ideas, test materials, and take another step toward empowering future educators to teach sustainability with impact. 🌍

🌍 This summer, the SENSES project is heading to ESERA 2025!
📅 25–29 August | 📍 Copenhagen, Denmark

On 28 August, members of the SENSES team will facilitate a workshop showcasing the work of the project on embedding Education for Environmental Sustainability (EES) into initial teacher education and professional development across Europe.

Focusing on the use of Socioscientific Issues (SSI) to promote critical scientific literacy and youth agency, this interactive workshop will explore how EES can be deepened through innovative pedagogies and aligned with the GreenComp sustainability competence framework.

The session will invite participants into a dynamic exchange of perspectives: exploring current practices, reflecting on the feasibility of innovative approaches, and discussing how GreenComp can serve as a foundation for competence development in EES.

We see this workshop as a meaningful opportunity to share emerging practices, spark dialogue, and connect with others working at the forefront of embedding sustainability into teacher education, empowering future educators to navigate complexity, engage ethically, and inspire action. It’s a chance to connect, question, and co-create with peers across Europe; we’re excited to be part of it! 🤝🌱
