The JGU Scotland HUB invites you to join our workshop TEACHING SCOTLAND in Mainz on Friday, 24 April 2026 from 10.00 – 16.30.
We are delighted to host this year's workshop in honour of the late Lorna Borrowman Smith, a dedicated teacher and member of our partners at the Association of Scottish Literary Studies in Glasgow. As part of her life’s work, she created numerous teaching resources that are part of the Scotland Library here at JGU. These are displayed alongside the endowment of her extensive book collection which serves to strengthen the internationalisation of teacher education.
➡️ During the full-day workshop, short presentations will provide initial ideas for incorporating Scottish topics into English teaching.
🏴 Dr Andrew MacKillop (University of Glasgow) will speak on “Teaching Scottish Literature: A Perspective on British Identity”, and Dr Anette Degott (Teaching Fellow at ZWW) will present on “Teaching Scotland’s Culture: Best Practice”.
💻 In the subsequent work session, we will endeavour to process this content from a methodical and didactic perspective, gathering ideas and inspiration for lesson plans and teaching units.
📚Following the workshop, we invite you to celebrate the Lorna Borrowman Smith Endowment for the JGU Scotland library with an introduction to the collection by her son Dr Stewart Smith.
Sign up for the workshop by Fri, 16 April 2026: https://jgu.to/0bzn

We are excited to host St Andrew's Day in Rheinland Pfalz on Wednesday, 26 November 2025 at 18.00 (German time).
In August, the Arran International Festival for Chamber Music and Song and the Mainz School of Music (Hochschule für Musik Mainz) signed a cooperation agreement to collaborate on activities that promote international cultural exchange, music and education.
This new cultural bridge is to be celebrated and therefore music will be the focus of this year’s St. Andrew’s Day. We are delighted to be invited to the Hochschule für Musik Mainz to celebrate with young world-class musicians from the island of Arran in Scotland and Mainz.
The event is free, but please register via email by 20 November 2025. ➡️ [email protected]

The Arran International Festival of Chamber Music and Song was indeed a world-class event!
It was great to see our musicians from Rheinland-Pfalz getting across borders to Arran and forming a partnership with Scottish musicians that has led to a new and exciting cooperation between the Arran International Festival and the Hochschule für Musik Mainz.
We are looking forward to welcoming you to Mainz in the autumn.
