Dunes are more than just sand.

Boa Vista's stunning dune landscapes have been shaped by nature over thousands of years. Today, they are under increasing threat from human activities such as illegal sand extraction, off-road driving, uncontrolled access, and the growing pressure of tourism.

But there is still hope.

Together with our partner Project Biodiversity, we have launched a pilot project to restore and protect these fragile ecosystems.

Restoring dune ecosystems is a long-term commitment, but every action we take today helps protect Boa Vista's unique biodiversity for generations to come.

Together, we can help safeguard Boa Vista's dunes for future generations.

Yes to the beauty of nature.

But behind many of these beautiful moments are less visible realities: pollution, bycatch, illegal wildlife trade and tourism that threaten sea turtles at every stage of their lives.

The good news? Most of these challenges are human-made, which means we can also be part of the solution.

Looking beyond the picture helps us understand why protecting sea turtles also means protecting the habitats they depend on.

Every year, we offer free swimming lessons for children on Boa Vista to help them gain confidence in the water and learn essential water safety skills. A survey we conducted a few years ago showed that only 14% of children on Boa Vista can swim safely, an issue we aim to address through this project.

The lessons also include creative activities that introduce children to the marine environment and the importance of protecting the ocean. We believe that people protect what they know and love.

To prepare for the upcoming season, our ten swimming instructors participated in a training program last week. This year, 130 children have signed up for the classes, including 80 first-time participants and 50 returning children.

The training was supported by representatives from the ICCA (Cape Verdean Institute for Children and Adolescents), the Regional Commander of the National Police, the Director of Emicela Boa Vista, the President of the Boa Vista Paralympic Association, and the local Fire Department.

We are grateful to the Bechtold Stiftung for funding this project and making these swimming lessons possible for the children of Boa Vista.

Sea Turtle Week 2026 officially came to an end last week, so let's take a look at some of the activities that took place in our projects in Indonesia during this special week! 🐢

Our colleagues at Yayasan Penyu Indonesia - YPI organised a variety of inspiring activities to raise awareness about sea turtle conservation and engage local communities. From educational outreach and interactive quizzes to beach cleanups and creative activities for children, these events highlighted the importance of protecting these incredible marine species and their habitats. The Nesting Season Has Officially Begun 🐢

Yesterday, our team recorded the first sea turtle of the season at Boa Esperança beach on Boa Vista. After documenting the first signs of nesting activity earlier this month, it is exciting to finally welcome the first nesting female ashore.

This encounter marks the start of what we hope will be another successful nesting season. Here's to many more turtles in the weeks ahead!
