Meet the Flatback Turtle, one of the world's most unique sea turtle species.

Unlike other sea turtles, Flatbacks are found only in Australia and spend their entire lives in the surrounding coastal waters.

Today's featured threat is coastal development and tourism. As beaches become increasingly developed, important nesting habitats can be lost or disturbed. Artificial lighting, increased human activity and habitat degradation can make it more difficult for sea turtles to nest successfully and for hatchlings to safely reach the ocean.

While we're highlighting this threat alongside the Flatback Turtle, it affects sea turtle species around the world.

Swipe through to learn more about Flatback Turtles and why protecting nesting beaches matters. 💙

Happy World Ocean Day 🌊

Every year on June 8th, people around the world come together to celebrate and protect our oceans.

This year’s theme, “Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet,” highlights how important protected ocean spaces are for marine life, healthy ecosystems and the future of our planet.

Our oceans regulate the climate, produce much of the oxygen we breathe and are home to an incredible diversity of life. But pollution, overfishing and climate change continue to put these ecosystems at risk.

Strong marine protected areas can help nature recover, protect biodiversity and create a healthier future for both the ocean and people.

One Ocean, One Climate, One Future — Together 💙
Stay tuned for more ocean and sea turtle content this upcoming sea turtle week starting tomorrow!

Sea Turtle Week is coming! 🐢

Next week, from June 8th to June 16th, we'll be celebrating Sea Turtle Week: starting with World Ocean Day on the 8th and ending with World Sea Turtle Day on the 16th.

Throughout the week, we'll introduce a different sea turtle species each day and take a closer look at the challenges these incredible animals face in the wild.

From pollution and industrial fishing to climate change and turtleshell trade, each post will highlight a threat affecting sea turtles. While each threat will be featured alongside a specific species, these challenges affect all sea turtle species around the world.

Join us as we explore the fascinating world of sea turtles and learn why their conservation matters for the future of our oceans.

Which species are you most excited to learn about? 💙🐢

Because turtles make everything better 🐢

29/04/2026

The Leatherback nesting season in Sumatra, Indonesia has come to an end, with only a few final nests remaining in the hatchery, which are about to hatch.

This year, we recorded a total of 323 leatherback turtle nests across our project sites:

177 on Simeulue
109 on Nias
19 on Sipora
18 on Salaut Besar

Each nest contributes valuable data to learn more about the data-deficient subpopulation of leatherback sea turtles in the Northeastern Indian Ocean.

Together, we continue to protect the future of these remarkable turtles.🐢
